Coordinator of Academic Support Services

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Writing Center

  • Manage the Writing Center in providing appropriate facilities, equipment, technical assistance, and needed supplies and materials to support students’ learning needs
  • Hire, train, and evaluate student employees (writing tutors) ensuring that all student employees understand the guidelines of professional service and patron confidentiality
  • Serve as a liaison between the faculty and administration, ensuring regular, open communication about various projects and establishing an atmosphere of trust, competence, and confidentiality.
  • Promote Writing Center services to the campus community

 Peer Tutoring Services

  • Manage peer tutoring services in providing appropriate facilities, equipment, and assistance to provide excellent service in the support students’ learning needs
  • Hire, train, and evaluate student employees (peer tutors) ensuring that all student employees understand the guidelines of professional service and patron confidentiality
  • Serve as a liaison between the faculty and administration, ensuring regular, open communication about various projects and establishing an atmosphere of trust, competence, and confidentiality.
  • Promote peer tutoring services to the campus community

 Supplemental Instruction

  • Manage Supplemental Instruction services offered to target courses by providing appropriate assistance to provide excellent service in the support students’ learning needs
  • Hire, train, and evaluate student employees (SI leaders) following the University of Missouri – KC model and ensuring that all student employees understand the SI processes and guidelines of professional service and patron confidentiality
  • Work closely with instructors of target courses to ensure an understanding of the scope and successes/limitations of the SI model and to position SI leaders to be successful resources for students
  • Serve as a liaison between the faculty and administration, ensuring regular, open communication about various projects and establishing an atmosphere of trust, competence, and confidentiality.
  • Promote Supplemental Instruction to the campus community

 Center for Teaching and Learning

  • Work with the Director for the Center for Teaching and Learning to provide workshops and other developmental activities for students and faculty
  • Manage the Academic Support budget, ensuring that all established fiscal policies and procedures are followed
  • Maintain membership in appropriate professional organizations as possible
  • Complete all required administrative reports, including a written annual assessment of the functionality of the Services within the campus.

 OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Acts to facilitate good communications between employees, clients, and management. through interpersonal and professional communication techniques.
  • Maintain University safety rules.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Master's degree in an appropriate discipline.
  • Experience in teaching and tutoring at the college level.
  • Outstanding customer service skills and the ability to work professionally with college students and faculty in a student-centered collegiate environment.
  • Demonstrated communication skills including outstanding writing, presentation, and instructional skills.
  • Knowledge of writing styles appropriate to the disciplines taught at the University.
  • Preferred experience with the University of Missouri – KC Supplemental Instruction mode.l
  • Preferred experience in tutor training and writing program and/or writing center administration.
