Schreiner University offers courses leading to a
MINOR IN SPANISH. The program is designed to give students an overview
of Peninsular, Latin American and Hispanic American perspectives.
Purpose
Schreiner University offers courses leading to a minor in Spanish.
The Spanish program supports the tenets of a liberal arts education
expressed in the Mission Statement of the University. A minor in
Spanish:
• is an advantage in the ever-growing bilingual U.S. job market
• opens the door to Latin America and Spain through literature,
film, art and travel abroad opportunities
• gives students access to Spanish and Latin American news sources
and business markets
Curriculum
The Spanish minor provides a foundational knowledge of linguistic,
literary, and cultural aspects of the study of Spanish. It is
designed to give students an overview of Peninsular, Latin American
and Hispanic American perspectives. As the literatures of these
areas are examined, histories and cultures also will be examined.
Course content emphasizes meaningful use of the language, and aims
to raise student awareness of the interaction of language, society,
and culture.
In order to acquire a minor in Spanish, students must take SPAN 2303
and 2304 and must complete an additional 12 advanced semester hours
from the following: SPAN 3301, 3302, 3303, 3304, and 3305.
Students with a placement score at the level of SPAN 1402 or above
may, upon written request to the Registrar, be given credit for
required courses at the appropriate level.
Opportunities
Through Schreiner University’s
International Studies program,
students can spend semesters in several locations immersed in a
different language and culture. The University also offers faculty
led winter and summer trips abroad. Students have recently studied
in Spain (Madrid and Salamanca) and Mexico (San Miguel de Allende).
After Graduation
A minor in Spanish prepares students for careers (in both public and
private sectors) in the areas of international business, travel and
tourism, healthcare, public service, and government.
