Music Major

orchestra at Schreiner University

Schreiner University music majors will study, develop, and build skills in the areas of music theory, history of music, sight singing and ear training, conducting, keyboard proficiency, expertise in an area of applied music, ensemble performance; and, for music education majors, pedagogy and teaching methods courses.

Schreiner University also offers a minor in music which allows interested students to study music in addition to their chosen major field of interest.

Enhanced Learning Opportunities
Many students at Schreiner (music majors and non-majors) enjoy participating in music ensembles for college credit.  Sign-up and join Schreiner's University Choir, Concert Choir, Concert Band, Jazz Band, String Chamber Ensemble, String Quartet, and Symphony of the Hills Orchestra for advanced students.

Your Future
Graduates of Schreiner University’s BA in Music are qualified to teach private lessons and/or work in a church music ministry program.  Graduates with a BA in Music with Teacher Certification (all level) may be qualified to teach elementary or secondary music at public or private school systems.  Both degrees will help equip students for further graduate study in Music.

"After graduating, I went right into teaching Pk-4th grade elementary music, 5th grade beginning band, and middle school band and choir at Hunt ISD staying close to home. The well-rounded education that I received at SU helped me transition comfortably into the classroom, and also helped me operate within a school district. I was able to continue to study with my long time instructors, Harry and Jan Schmidt, who taught me to be confident in my skills as a musician. The small class sizes helped me make real connections with my music and education professors, which made me feel truly supported on my journey to becoming a music educator. They never stopped pushing me to do my best even when I was not always confident in myself.” ~ Ellen Hernandez , BA in Music Education, Schreiner University
