The State Board for Teacher Certification (SBEC) has announced significant changes to teacher certification programs and requirements beginning in Fall 2001. Prospective teacher certification candidates applying for entry in Fall 2001 or later are urged to contact the Director of Teacher Education for information.  All Schreiner University certification programs require a baccalaureate degree (minimum of 120 semester hours) that includes at least 60 semester hours of liberal arts course work as a foundation for teacher preparation.

This foundation includes the following minimums:
12 hrs. English (6 hrs. in composition & mechanics)
3 hrs. speech
6 hrs. American History
3 hrs. political science
4 hrs. natural science with lab
3 hrs. mathematics (algebra or advanced)
3 hrs. computing and information technology
3 hrs. fine arts

Schreiner University offers high quality teacher preparation in:  Elementary, Middle School, Secondary and All-level certification.   Each program degree has specific course requirements leading to certification. Candidates should consult with academic advisors and the Teacher Education Office for specific information.  Students are required to make formal application for admission to the Schreiner Teacher Certification Program and to the Student Teaching Program. Applicants must have at least 60 semester hours (junior standing) to be admitted.

EDUCATION (EDUC)
Students presently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree at Schreiner University may also pursue teacher certification.

Preparation for certification to teach in the public schools of Texas is offered in biology (life science), English (language arts), history and mathematics for grades 8-12; in English, Language Arts and Reading, Mathematics, Mathematics/Science and generalist for grades 4-8; generalist in grades EC-4 and in exercise science and music for all-level.

Students may pursue a Graduate Teacher Certification Program for one year and continue for a second year to complete a Master of Education in Teaching. Also they may pursue a graduate degree in education by enrolling in a one year program to earn a Master of Education degree. The principal certification option requires an additional semester.

In accordance with SB994 and Subchapter M of the 1987 Standards for the Teaching Profession, and beginning with the 1989-90 school year, students will register for the following 18 semester hours of professional development:

EC-4: EDUC 3304, 3306, 3310, 4302, 4602
4-8: EDUC 3308, 3309, 3310, 4303, 4606
8-12: EDUC 3305, 3307, 3310, 4303, 4601

All-Level: May elect to follow the sequence for either the 4-8 or 8-12 list, but should remain consistent. EDUC 4603.

IMPORTANT: For the upper level education courses listed, none can be taken prior to documentation of passing THEA scores and admission to teacher education. Questions may be addressed to the Director of Teacher Education.
