Dr.
John D. Huddleston
title: Professor of History and Dean
of the School of Liberal Arts
your alma mater/s: University of Texas
at Austin, B.A., government; M.A., history; Texas A& M University
at College Station, Ph.D., American History
favorite movie/s: Lawrence of Arabia.
However, I really like to laugh and be entertained so comedies are
good.
favorite food: Mexican food. Isn't
tortilla soup the food of the (Latin) gods (particularly in cold
weather)?
favorite type of music: First and
foremost the Rolling Stones because we all know that old guys rock!!
Then Queen, Thorogood ('Bad to the Bone'), James Brown, Willie Nelson,
and Jimmie Buffett. Yes, I know-an eclectic group.
favorite vacation spot: Any location
in England. If I win the lottery, I'm gone….at least during
every summer!
what's on your night-stand right now? (book/music/mag/dvd/whatever):
Volume three by Caro on the life of Lyndon Johnson, but last year
I read twelve of Tom Clancy's novels from The Hunt for Red October
to Red Rabbit.
hobbies/interests/extra-curricular
activities OUTSIDE SU: Since I am an historian, naturally
I am interested in old things like antiques, coins, books, etc.
I am very taken with my wife (who is not old!) and my children,
and I have Nicholas, my 'best bud,' my dog (pictured, left). And
I have dabbled in stained glass for years (examples of his work
are pictured below).

note: Dr. Huddleston's wife, Margaret, teaches Math at Schreiner.
activities/interests/associations ON CAMPUS: Dean of the
School of Liberal Arts- an enjoyable, rewarding, yet sometimes frustrating,
time consuming task similar to counting ants pouring out of a disturbed
anthill. But it is the counting that I really enjoy…
favorite class to teach @ SU & why:
Absolutely
impossible to answer. I love every subject and every class that
I teach, from the American history survey, Texas history, upper
division history courses, the occasional political science 2301
or 2302, to HIST 3301 (Social Studies for Elementary Certification).
Who/what/where
INSPIRES you & why? The people with whom I associate
inspire me: my family, my colleagues, my students, and my friends.
Human beings are wonderful creatures of God and capable of great
things. And daily I see folks at Schreiner reaching out to educate
and help their fellow man. I see that as very inspirational.

why
(do you like) Schreiner? Why Schreiner? Why not? I arrived
at SU during the transition from two-year junior college into a
four-year, baccalaureate institution. I came and I have stayed to
play a part in the building of a great university. That work after
twenty plus years is not done. We collectively have come far, but
we have a distance to go. Together we collectively will walk that
road and are better for it. Unlike the well-established universities
in Texas where programs were begun decades ago, we are creating
and shaping programs for the future. Who wouldn't wish to be a part
of that?
