How long have you been with SU? Since August
2007
favorite movie:
"Bladerunner"
favorite food:
Anything from the sea: whether it’s octopus cooked slowly
in olive oil, calamari fried to perfection, shrimp anyway it comes,
crab (dungeoness) or lobster boiled pink and cracked open, mussels
in cream or garlic butter sauce, oysters raw, or good old fashioned
fish and chips.
favorite music/band/type of music:
folk-rock, and the Beatles
favorite vacation spot:
Ocean/cityscapes. Greece is wonderful. London is fabulous. Mountains
in Colorado and New Mexico are sublime. Most recently, and most
enjoyably I visited the Caribbean and discovered in places like the
Cayman Islands and Belize that I love reefs.
favorite book:
Outside of my studies and
professional life, Terry Pratchett, Christopher Moore and Jasper
Fforde are probably my favorite authors, Conrad’s Nostromo is
probably my favorite serious book.
what's
on your night-stand right now? (book/music/DVD):
"The History of Virginity" by
Anke Bernau (no, honestly!), and "Left Hand of Darkness" by Ursula
Le Guin.
who/what/where INSPIRES you & why?
Alisa, Loving friends, children, laughter, and the spirit of enquiry
inspire me.
hobbies/interests/extra-curricular activities OUTSIDE SU:
writing, cooking, yoga, martial arts, fishing, canoeing
activities/interests/associations
ON CAMPUS:
I organize the campus Syers Shakespeare Lecture, participate in
Monday Night Fiction, am active in Student Senate as an advisor, in
Sigma Tau Delta the English honors society/English majors
organization, participate in Yoga, and generally try to join in
events on campus that enrich us like, among many others, Coffee
House. I am currently involved in bringing the Actors of the London
Stage to campus to perform King Lear for us in 2009.
favorite
class to teach @ SU & why: I enjoy all my
classes—but so far my favorite class would have to be Shakespeare.
His writing endlessly renews itself, and never loses the ability to
move us between laughter, admiration and tears.
why (do you like) Schreiner? Beautiful
location, friendly people, warm and lively students. What’s not to
like?
