Favorite movie:
"To Kill a Mockingbird" with Gregory Peck: It
was one of the few videos that I watched as a kid. It made an indelible
impression about individual responsibilities in a society. I try to
think, "What would Atticus do?" I am also a big fan of the "Law and
Order" series, with most of my time now focused on watching "Criminal
Intent" with Vincent D'Onofrio. Now, I sometimes catch myself asking,
"What would Goran do?"
Favorite food:
Thai and Sushi, with Korean running closely
behind.
Favorite type of music:
Billie Holliday, Pink Floyd, the Cure, Keane, The
Killers, The Delays, and The Postal Service (just to name a few)

Favorite vacation spot: Europe
(except Switzerland); I also think Australia would be one of my
favorites if I ever get to visit.
Favorite book: "I Know Why the Caged
Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou; "Slaughterhouse Five" by Kurt Vonnegut;
"Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Book Got
Wrong" by James Loewen; "Night" by Elie Wiesel

What's on your night stand right now?:
"Harry Potter und die Kammer des Schreckens"
von J.K. Rowling; "Die deutsche Kurzgeschichte der Gegenwart" von
Manfred Durzak; "Hitler's Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the
Holocaust" by Daniel Goldhagen
Who/what/where
inspires you & why?
Knowledge and the thirst for it, especially
spiritually. I believe that one should relentlessly pursue it, but also
remember to be careful to live one's life. I think a lot of people
forget that it's not what you know, but how you use it.
Hobbies/interests/extra-curricular activities OUTSIDE SU:
My spouse and I are 'food-ies': people who
regularly eat out and find new 'favorite' restaurants. We love to try
new cuisines, focusing on how the food tastes, not what it is called.
Our current and long-standing favorites are Thai Taste and Sushi Zushi
in San Antonio.
Activities/interests/associations
ON CAMPUS:
I like being involved with
environmentally-focused organizations, as well as those that promote
individual rights, not restrictions. Academically, I focus on Holocaust
and genocide studies. I worked at the United States Holocaust Memorial
Museum Library for a short time, and I try to maintain my knowledge in
that area. The recent events in the Sudan prove that history will
repeat itself. If we don't learn about it, how can we keep from
repeating it? At Schreiner I am highly involved with
Allied
Advance, a group of faculty, staff, and students who provide a
supportive environment for GLB&Q students.
Favorite
class to teach @ SU & why:
German
1401 & 1402: It's my first year teaching German, but I am enjoying
it so far.
Why
do you like Schreiner?
I like that Schreiner focuses more on teaching
than research. At much larger universities the faculty are required to
put an enormous amount of time towards research in order that the school
can earn more monies for that purpose. While research is encouraged, I
like that the students at Schreiner are truly the focus of faculty
attention, not a portfolio.
