 Grant and Need Based Aid Programs Available at Schreiner University


The awards listed below are federal, state or institutional grants that are awarded by our office based on your FAFSA information. No other steps need to be taken to apply for these grants other than filing a FAFSA, ideally by the priority deadline:

Federal Grant Programs:


Federal Pell Grant: This Federal grant is awarded to students who have demonstrated significant financial need. PELL awards are based on a family contribution scale and payment schedule published annually by the U.S. Department of Education. For the 2007-2008 academic year, the Pell grant range is from $400 to $4310 for a full-time student.

Federal SEOG: The Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is awarded to students who demonstrate significant financial need. Following federal guidelines, it is awarded only to Pell recipients.

Limited funds are available. Renewal students meeting eligibility requirements are given consideration, along with students demonstrating the greatest need.

Federal Academic Competiveness Grant (ACG) -- are basic entitlements available to first and second year students who have successfully completed a state-approved rigorous high school curriculum, are eligible for a Pell grant, are U.S. citizens, are enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours per term), are working toward a degree but have never been previously enrolled in a degree program, have completed high school after January 1, 2006 for first year recipients and after January 1, 2005 for second year recipients, and maintain a 3.0 GPA. The first year ACG amount is $750. The second year ACG amount is $1,300. To receive the second year ACG, a student must have completed at least 30 credit hours and have a 3.0 GPA.


Federal SMART Grant


The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant, also known as the National SMART Grant is available during the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are U.S. citizens, eligible for the Federal Pell Grant, enrolled full time, and who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security. The student must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major. The National SMART Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award. Third and fourth year students are eligible for $4000 for each year. Students may only receive the grant for the specific semester and/or year that they maintain all of the criteria.

There are no renewals for third or fourth year awards.
 

State Grant Programs


Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG):
This need-based grant is awarded to Texas residents to help them meet the cost of attending a private university in Texas. Since funds are limited, priority in awarding will be given to students who demonstrate significant financial need. Institutional, State and some Federal funds are limited each year based on funding notices and allocations received from the University Board of Trustees, State Agencies and the Federal Department of Education.

Renewal criteria for awards received after 9/1/2005 require students to complete 24 credit hours within the academic year and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better, in addition to maintaining satisfactory academic progress and exhibiting financial need.  Appeal requests are handled through the Office of Financial Aid.
 

Institutional Grant Programs

Hill Country College Fund Grant: A unique grant funded by annual contributions to the Hill Country College Fund. This grant is awarded to residents of Kerr, Kimble, Kendall, Bandera, Real or Edwards County who exhibit financial need according the FAFSA. Awards range from $100-$5,000. Funding is limited.
