STUDENT GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Upper class Schreiner students have provided these explanations of terms you will encounter in the Schreiner culture. Study them now and you'll soon be talking like a real Mountaineer!

Advisor Newsletter - A campus publication that has all kinds of valuable dates and information, including a list of student birthdays each month; be sure to check your mailbox.

Campus Rec - They plan all kinds of outdoor activities, check out kayaks to students for free, and coordinate all of the intramural activities on campus like flag football, volleyball, dodge ball, indoor/outdoor soccer, softball and basketball. Outdoor Recreation includes rock climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, camping and a ski trip over Christmas break!

Corner Pocket - Snack-bar area on the first floor of the Cailloux building; the declining balance part of your meal plan can be used here or cash; they are open at times when the cafeteria is not; especially when you need those all important cheese sticks at eleven order for your brain to study any more. This is also where a number of our student activities take place.

Delaney Hall - Residence Hall located across from the Cailloux building; it used to be an all male hall but later became a co-ed hall for freshmen; you will hear this in reference to "when we all lived in Delaney" etc, etc. Some believe Delaney is haunted… ask about the cemetery.

IDST 1201 - (Freshmen Seminar) This is the class that all freshmen are required to take in the Fall semester; this class will teach you some practical stuff for becoming a college student; it will also teach you a new way to think about things in your world.

Judicial Board - A jury of Schreiner University community members in a sense; a group of students and faculty meet to hear and discuss the facts surrounding Schreiner University policy violations (see SU Handbook) that are found by either SU Security or Residence Life staff. This group also decides what sanction (punishment) is necessary for the violation.

Mail Center - In the top floor of Cailloux where you can pick up and send your mail. They are open from 9-3 on weekdays, but they are not a post office so some services are not available. A small tip - remember the combination to your mailbox - it will save you some headaches.

Mountaineers - That's the official mascot of Schreiner University - we've been trying to figure this one out for several years now… if you have any ideas, please share.

Mountaineer Newspaper - Campus-wide newspaper written and produced by a very creative team of students complete with sports articles, campus news and events, calendars, a comic strip, and even student editorials.

Movie Night - $2 movie night at the local cinema.

P.A.'s - (Peer Advisors) Upper class students who will be your leaders during Mountaineer Days; this group of people is made up of students from across the campus; they will lead you in several different activities and can answer any of the questions you might have about SU; some P.A.'s will also be in your IDST 1201 (see definition) class in the fall; this group is really a fun group to know.

Peer Tutors - Junior and Senior level students who offer their services to tutor almost any subject that is offered at SU - for FREE - that's the best part. All you have to do is make an appointment in the bottom floor of Dickey Hall. Note to Freshmen - if a subject is giving you problems, start tutoring early - it will help your GPA. (This is from someone who found that out the hard way).

Quad - short for quadrangle; the sometimes grassy area located in the center of campus; according to tradition, all buildings on campus face the "quad"; this is where a majority of outside events take place.

R.A.'s - (Resident Assistants) Upper class students living in Residence Halls who serve as leaders; they are there to keep the peace and to ensure that all Residence Hall policies are followed; they can do things like unlock your door whenever you forget your keys, give you light bulbs, and provide activities to do with other people in the living area.

R.D.'s - (Resident Directors) Professional staff who are employees of SU and who live in the Residence Halls; they oversee the R.A.'s as well as the residents; they serve as resource who report to the Director of Residence Life; they assist the R.A.'s in many different situations; these people are really interesting, so get to know your R.D.'s too.

Recognized Student Organizations (R.S.O.'s) - These are clubs and organizations that are financially and academically supported by SU. Each RSO must have a constitution, criteria for selecting members, and a faculty advisor. Each RSO also has a representative on Senate (see Senate).

Schreiner Diner - Otherwise known as the cafeteria; they serve such delicious things as prime rib and steak (unfortunately that's once a semester) and we occasionally have a themed lunch or dinner (complete with authentic music and everything). The cafeteria workers are some of the friendliest people on campus, so get to know them; don't miss brunch on weekend mornings - omelets made to order with all kinds of ingredients. Beware - the "Freshmen Fifteen" is not a myth. It happens to both males and females.

Senate - Student government group made up of various student leaders from each class, representatives from each RSO, and faculty advisors; this group is headed up by an Executive Board that includes the Student Body President and other officers; Senate heads up various activities on campus and serves as a link between administration and the student body.

Student Activities Board (S.A.B.) - This is a group of creative students who work with Student Activities to coordinate and plan activities on campus; they are responsible for planning billiard tournaments, club nights, bingo (with DVD players as prizes), and even Jell-O wrestling.

SU Handbook - An important little book, so don't lose it; this tells you all about SU, the various RSO's on campus, academic stuff, and all of the policies of SU, so read it! Also includes a handy calendar and appointment book. CLICK HERE FOR THE ON-LINE VERSION.

Theatre - Located in the back corner of the Corner Pocket; plop down in a beanbag chair and watch movie (video or DVD) on the 12 foot screen with surround sound. Movies are frequently shown on the weekend and sometimes during the week. You can even hook up your Play Station and get big-screen, surround sound action.

The Loop - The circular drive around campus; the loop is about 1 mile long; you will frequently see people stopped on the loop talking to people passing by; you will also hear the following statements a lot - "We saw him driving around the loop" or "We went to run the loop last night."

The Muse - Student created artistic publication that includes poetry, art, and stories written by SU students; this is published once a semester; a lot of your English professors will probably ask you to contribute.

Tutoring Lab - Where absolutely free tutoring happens - located in Dickey Hall (the building with the computer lab). Also see Peer Tutor. Click here for the Peer Tutor website.

Underground Organizations - Basically, the behavior of these clubs is not in-line with the mission of the University and they are not recognized. This means that they receive no funding or support from SU. You will probably hear these mentioned at the beginning of the school year.
