The exploits of a student in England.

by Allison M.

(excerpt from the Mountaineer student newspaper)

Well, it's that time of year again, when you get to worry about schedules, practice, and how to decorate your room for maximum effect with the minimum upkeep.

I, on the other hand, am worrying about what all I'm going to take "across the pond." You see, I'm going to London, England through the Study Abroad Program here at Schreiner.

Didn't know we had a Study Abroad Program, did you? Well, we do. If you are interested, see Martha York, Director of International Studies. She can work magic if you want to study abroad somewhere. And that is my only shameless plug in this whole article.

I guess I'll introduce myself. I'm a chemistry major and a senior here at Schreiner. Truth be told, a lot of you probably don't know me. But that is the whole point of my article. It's for me to show you what it's like abroad so you can get your butt out here into this big wide world and see what it has in store for you.

Right now, its 2:02a.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2003. I leave this Saturday. My main concern is not turbulence, jetlag, or airplane food. It's how I'm going to pack four months of winter clothes into two checked bags and one carry-on. Seriously, they need to change the baggage limit for international flights. Write your senator!! I'm also wondering how I've accumulated so much crap in such a short lifetime. However, I digress.

This article will try and keep you up-to-date on my experience abroad - like which are the best places to eat, drink, and be merry. However, this is not just a vacation. Sadly, schoolwork is involved. I'll be taking Parliament (Gov't), Art History, Theatre in London, and British IDST. That's right. Even abroad you still get to take IDST. I'm excited about the theatre and art history classes - theatre because we get to see all of the plays in the various playhouses in London, and art history because I'm a science nerd, and I haven't had the opportunity to take any art classes here at Schreiner.

If any of you have questions about life abroad in London, feel free to contact the Mountaineer, and they will hunt me down. I'll do my best to accommodate you and show you what life is really like "across the pond." Cheerio!!
