FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR
Fall 2009
Greetings and welcome to a new year of Schreiner international
travel. As I report to you this September morning, I can tell you
that Jared Grove, exercise science major, is at Massey University in
Palmerston North, New Zealand, for the fall semester. It is our
first time to have a student travel there for semester study, and we
are excited for him. Usually, students choose a destination in
Western Europe.
We had two successful trips following graduation last spring – to
Paris and Taize, France, for two weeks in May and to Florence,
Italy, for four weeks in July. The Taize trip involved a number of
our Religion majors who spent time working and praying at the
monastic spiritual center there, where students come from all over
the world to share this experience. The trip also included a weekend
in Paris, sightseeing and enjoying the French cuisine. The course
offering during the spring semester to prepare them for the trip was
RELI 2370 – Topics in Religion
The Art Department spent part of last year organizing a four-week
summer school semester at Santa Reparata International School of Art
in Florence, Italy, led by Dr. David Smith, Prof James Harris and
Prof Deborah Conner. Seventeen students survived the hot weather and
little air conditioning to have a wonderful learning experience
which included classroom work as well as field trips throughout
Florence and the surrounding area of Tuscany. Some of the students
chose to travel to Venice to the international Biennale Art Show one
weekend. The course offerings for the summer semester included ART
2341 Art History II, ART 1302 Drawing, ART 2330 Intro to Digital
Photography, ART 3310 Digital Photography and ART 4370 Design
Journal.
The current academic year will have several more trips involving
very diversified experiences.
