Living History Day - What’s In a Name?

For Immediate Release

by Bob Gray for THMF

Are you one of those people who conjures up images of people to match their monikers? How about Dusty Britches? And Hoppy Hopkins. Rusty Cox. Doc Moore, Tom Wells and Maggie Meek. Whoa, how about Standing Eagle Baez?

Looking over the names of the more than forty performers that will be entertaining us (for FREE!) during Living History Day almost seems a stroll among the esoteric and mysterious. A few more that prod the imagination are Vaquero Productions, Tim Tingle, Y.O. Longhorns, and the Hill Country Archeological Association.

So, what do all these names have in common? Each knows something you could know. And all of them will be on the Schreiner University campus – some under trees, some under tents, teepees, and other shelters – to tell you what you could know.

From 9 am to 3 pm on Friday, 26 September, the Texas Heritage Music Foundation and supporters will sponsor the Living History Day. And that’s the third thing they have in common: all forty-plus are historians, each with a specialty. Between them we’re looking at over a thousand years of historical knowledge and experience.

Since the date for the Living History Day is carefully chosen each year to celebrate the life of America’s Blues Yodeler and Father of Country Music – Jimmie Rodgers – it’s only fitting that one of our local actors, Tony Navarra, will spend the day spinning tales of him. Others will perform songs, discuss songwriting, make quilts, weave pine needles, relate
historical stories of courage and adventure. And if you’re a television addict you’ll love this part: if a subject bores you, move on! With over forty different performers spotted around several acres, you won’t be bored long.

So, what will you be doing that day? The lawn can wait another day or two. History, of course, waits for no one –and this Living History Day is a one-day only affair that you should take advantage of. There’s something about ambling the grounds around the Schreiner campus that is relaxing – seems like a carnival - and makes kids receptive to information.
While most local teachers know about this event – in fact, many bring their students – if your children’s teachers don’t know, inform them. And be aware that this event is not geared down for children. The music alone makes it an adult adventure.

On Friday, the 26th of September, from 9 am to 3 pm, on the beautifully landscaped grounds of Schreiner University in Kerrville, the Texas Heritage Music Foundation is providing free entertainment and priceless history. You know there will be lots to do for your entire family and all your friends. You know it won’t cost more than the gas to get there. You have a decision to make and a calendar to mark.
