State-of-the-art Mountaineer Center to Open in 2009

Mountaineer Center rendering Schreiner University’s proposed Mountaineer Center will provide students with a state-of-the-art facility, which will be the headquarters for all Schreiner’s intercollegiate and intramural athletics, and provide a first-class environment for academic classes, physical fitness, recreation programs, and community events.

“The Mountaineer Center is a huge step forward for Schreiner athletics,” said Ron Macosko, Schreiner athletic director. “With these new facilities, we will be better able to compete with our conference peers and attract the best and brightest student athletes from around Texas. Because of these assets, more students will get to benefit from a Schreiner education and degree, not to mention participate on Schreiner Mountaineer teams.”

Fundraising for this thoroughly modern facility is already underway, with completion of the 80,000 square-foot complex scheduled in 2009.  The new facilities for baseball, softball, tennis, basketball, soccer and volleyball will help attract and retain student athletes, who comprise more than 25 percent of Schreiner’s student body.

“As a volleyball player, I know the Mountaineer Center will be a great addition to our campus and will give us the opportunity to host tournaments in all of our sports,” said Schreiner junior Kassie Barlow.

“The Mountaineer Center will be tangible evidence of Schreiner’s recognition that educating the whole person includes providing quality facilities for recreation, wellness and athletics,” said Schreiner’s president, Dr. Tim Summerlin. “It is one element not yet realized in the amazing renaissance of campus facilities of the last seven years. But we have made this commitment to our students, present and future, and we have the exciting challenge now to deliver on that commitment. The students deserve nothing less,” he said.
