Unabomber’s
Brother To Discuss Death Penalty at Schreiner
University Sept 12
Schreiner University is bringing the brother of
the infamous Unabomber Ted Kaczynski to campus
on Tuesday, September 12 for a lecture entitled
“Confronting Violence, Seeking Justice — The
Death Penalty in America: A Conversation with
David Kaczynski.” This event, sponsored by the
Schreiner Student Activities Board, will take
place at 7 p.m. in the ballroom of the
Floyd & Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center
on the Schreiner campus. It is free and
open to the public.
The Kaczynski family became a focus of media
attention in April 1996 with the arrest of Ted
Kaczynski, who the FBI had code-named The
Unabomber. Kaczynski was responsible for a
17-year reign of terror involving mail bombs
that killed three people and injured 23 others.
Soon after Kaczynski’s arrest, it was leaked
that Kaczynski’s brother David, a youth
counselor, and David’s wife Linda Patrik, a
college professor, had approached the FBI with
their suspicions about Kaczynski, resulting in
his arrest.
The couple soon felt betrayed, first when the
U.S. Justice Department broke its promise to
keep the family’s role in the investigation
confidential, and again when it sought the death
penalty despite Kaczynski’s serious mental
illness. David and Linda fought for nearly two
years to prevent the execution of David’s
brother, and ultimately failed in their quest
for justice.
David Kaczynski has spoken widely and appeared
on national television shows voicing his
opposition to the death penalty. In 1999, David
and Linda were honored by the New York State Bar
Association with its annual Justice Award – the
organization’s only presentation to non-lawyers.
David has addressed community, school, and
professional audiences on a range of topics,
including the death penalty, mental illness,
non-violence, and ethical decision-making. In
July 2001, after a nationwide search, David was
selected as the new Executive Director of New
Yorkers Against the Death Penalty – a statewide
organization that unconditionally opposes
capital punishment.
