Dr.
Mary Seay, associate professor of education at
Schreiner University, won second place in the
Florida Writing Association’s 2006 “Stepping
Stones” writing competition for authors of
children’s literature. The competition includes
short stories, poetry, and book first chapters.
Seay’s winning entry in the short story category
is entitled “Jake and Me,” and focuses on the
experiences of two brothers who resolve a crisis
in their lives through discovering the
importance of mutual caring. The story is aimed
at children ages 10-14, and is currently being
reviewed for publication.
Seay, who specializes in early childhood
development, was recently the featured presented
in Schreiner’s ongoing Chautauqua lecture
series, speaking to an overflow crowd on the
topic “Teaching Babies to Read.” She can be
