Symphony of The Hills will
begin its season Oct. 5 with a performance
featuring one of Texas’ premier classical
musicians.
Stephanie Sant’Ambrogio will be the soloist in
the Violin Concerto in D Minor by legendary
Finnish composer Jan Sibelius.
The 7:30 p.m. concert in Kerrville's
Cailloux Center for the Performing Arts will
feature mostly Scandinavian works. In addition
to the three-movement concerto, the 80-member
orchestra will play Sibelius' “Finlandia,”
Edvard Grieg's four-movement “Peer Gynt Suite
No. 2” and Hugo Alfven's “Midsummer Vigil:
Swedish Rhapsody,” all under direction of
Conductor and Artistic Director Dr. Jay Dunnahoo.
Well-known singer and actor Dan Groat will open
the concert by leading the audience in the
national anthem. Prior to the start of the
concert, the 115-member Hill Country Youth
Orchestra will play in the lobby of the Cailloux
Center.
Based at Schreiner University in Kerrville, the
Symphony of the Hills is made up of professional
musicians from throughout the Hill Country, San
Antonio and Austin areas, along with faculty
members and advanced students of music at
Schreiner.
Kerrville-area members include French horn
player Richard Layman of Ingram and violinists
Karen, Patricia and Brad Lee, Cathy Learoyd,
Ralph Chalfant, Aleta Domingue, Elena Dalton, Ed
Wallace and Sue Moss; violist Karen Billingslee;
cellists Daniel Prislovsky, Mark Nugent and
Laura Emmons; flautists Michelle Adam and Katie
Jones; bassoonists Jan Schmidt and Sandy
Fusilier; clarinetists Tom Terrell and Margie
Schwartz; French horn player Bonnie Rockey;
trumpeters George Eychner and Jason Adam;
trombonists Jim Abbatiello and Ted Conerly;
pianist Don Crandall and percussionists Jeff
Miller, Jeffrey Rector, Kathryn Miller and
Jonathan Shim, all of Kerrville.
Schreiner members are violinists Mary Wingo, Tim
Tucker, Katie Beth Lane, and Jessie Hudson;
violist Mari Van Dusen; cellists Basil Sarweh,
Graham Low and Ashley Moore; double bassist
Kristen Glass; flautist Kendra Early and French
horn player Brett Rozek.
Upcoming concerts will be Nov. 30, Feb. 22 and
April 26, with the children's concert scheduled
for the afternoon of Feb. 22.
Sant'Ambrogio, concertmaster of the San Antonio
Symphony since 1994, is founder and director of
the Cactus Pear Music Festival, which plays
chamber music concerts each summer in San
Antonio, Austin and the Hill Country. She has
appeared with the San Antonio Symphony in
Kerrville and Fredericksburg and the Symphony of
the Hills in previous seasons. A student
of the violin since she was five and a performer
nearly as long, she has played with the
Cleveland Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony and
chamber music ensembles throughout the United
States and in Canada, Europe, Latin America and
Africa and taught in a half-dozen U.S. and
Canadian music festivals.
Three compact discs by the Cactus Pear group
will be on sale at the Oct. 5 concert, with 25
percent of the proceeds going to the Symphony.
The parent Symphony of the Hills Assn. has
Section 501(c)3 status under the Internal
Revenue Code, making donations eligible for
deduction from federal income tax. In addition
to ticket sales, donations and advertising are
essential to orchestra's ability to operate with
a full complement of classical musicians.
