Nevil “The Shadow” Shed, a member of the history-making 1966 NCAA
Division I championship basketball team, will speak at Schreiner
University at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13, in the ballroom of
the Floyd & Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center on the
University campus.
The Texas Western College team, the Miners, made sports history by
fielding an all African-American lineup in a championship game. The
2006 movie “Glory Road” is the story of that championship season.
Texas Western is now The University of Texas-El Paso.
Shed, a starter for the Miners, was
drafted by the Boston Celtics, but was sidelined by an injury. He
returned to his alma mater as assistant to his former coach, Don
Haskins, and eventually became assistant coach of the University of
Texas-San Antonio’s first basketball team. He lives in San Antonio
and is now a coordinator for student activities at UTSA.
Shed will
talk about his experiences as part of that famous team as both a
player and an African-American, and some of the issues the team
faced in the 1960s.

Hudson-Velazquez at 830-792-7283.
