Washington Monthly’s ranking methodology differs from that of the
better-known publications in that it is weighted more toward “outcomes” than
“input.” Rather than using factors such as entering freshman SAT scores and
alumni giving, Washington Monthly’s rankings measure how well colleges and
universities are serving the nation based on their graduates’ performance in
three categories: social mobility, research and service.
