Schreiner basketball ‘thinks pink’ and teddy bears
When the Schreiner University men’s and women’s basketball teams play Concordia University on Saturday, Feb. 9, they will be playing for more than points on the board. Along with Schreiner Campus Ministry and the Student Activities Board they will be raising funds and collecting teddy bears for people battling cancer. Schreiner cancer survivors will be honorary coaches for the games, and recognized at halftime.
The women’s team effort is part of a national “Think Pink” event that is sponsored annually by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. Fans who wear pink will get into the game free. Players and coaches will be wearing pink, and referees will have pink whistles. All funds raised by concession sales will go to the local Cancer Assistance Fund. The Student Activities Board is donating the concessions for both games.
Players also will be collecting teddy bears to be distributed to children at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center as part of “Todd’s Teddy Bear Drive,” which is a project conceived by a former Schreiner student battling cancer and named in his honor. Fans bringing new teddy bears to the game will get in free. The teddy bear drive will be February 9-23. Anyone who wants to donate a bear during that time can take it to the office of Jennifer Hudson-Velazquez, director of student activities, on the first floor of the Floyd & Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center. The Schreiner Student Senate will match the number of donated bears.
For more information about this event, or to make a donation, call Hudson-Velazquez at 830-792-7283, or send an e-mail to JMHudson@schreiner.edu.
