Schreiner Hires New Volleyball Coach from USC
Schreiner University Athletics has hired Phillip White, formerly of the University of Southern California, as the university’s new head volleyball coach. While at USC, White was an assistant to both Bill Ferguson, head men’s volleyball coach, and Mick Haley, head women’s volleyball coach at Southern Cal.
Ferguson, one of the nation’s rising young coaching stars, said this of White: “Schreiner University hit a home run with Coach Phillip White. I have been fortunate to be Phillip’s coach at the junior level, and coached with him at the junior and collegiate levels. I have never worked with someone who loves the game of volleyball more than he does. His love for the game shows in his work. Our players and staff at USC greatly enjoyed his enthusiasm, and respect his dedication to his job and knowledge of the game. He made us better in every way. The Trojan volleyball family is so proud of Coach White and we wish him and Schreiner University volleyball the best of luck.”
White was an NCAA Division I player at Long Beach State, from which he graduated with a degree in communication studies. He has coached elite-level players at both the Southern California Volleyball Club and the Long Beach Volleyball Club, and also has coached high school teams in California.
“We are very excited that Coach White has agreed to join our staff,” said Schreiner’s director of athletics Ron Macosko. “He’s young, but already has a strong technical background in the game. The committees who interviewed him really liked his energy and passion and I know that the team members who participated couldn't wait to get on the court after talking with him. The fact that Mick Haley, one of the premiere coaches in women’s college volleyball today, spoke so highly of him only cemented our interest. We expect him to come in and make an immediate impact on what was already a talented, intelligent and mature group of young women.”
White takes over a Schreiner team that was 11-14 in 2007 and 8-10 in the American Southwest Conference. SU finished fifth in the ASC West division. Schreiner returns nearly all of its starters and key contributors, which gives the team great optimism for 2008 and beyond.
