Schreiner University Recognizes Outstanding Faculty
Dr. Mike Looney, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Schreiner University recently announced the annual faculty awards for excellence in teaching and scholarship for the 2007-08 academic year at a dinner on May 2.
Dr. Kiley Miller, assistant professor of chemistry, received the Margaret Hosler Award for Excellence in Teaching, which recognizes professors who have made a lasting impression on those they teach. Students nominate candidates for the Hosler and choose the recipient.
The Harriett Garrett Award, which students also bestow, recognizes outstanding teaching. This year’s recipient is Dr. Stefan T. Mecay, assistant professor of mathematics. Mecay received the award once before in 2006.
The Excellence in Scholarship Award went to Dr. Kathleen Hudson, Schreiner professor of English and executive director of the Texas Heritage Music Foundation. Schreiner deans nominate candidates for this award.
Ms. Tanya Jimenez, instructor in mathematics, received the Elmore Whitehurst Award for Creative Teaching. The Hatton W. Sumners Foundation established the Whitehurst awards, which include one for students. A group of public school teachers along with Dr. Looney choose the faculty recipient.
Ms. Karen Backor, an instructor in the education department, was named Advisor of the Year. The Schreiner deans and Dr. Looney choose recipients for this award. Backor is a 2002 Schreiner alumna and is currently finishing her doctorate at Texas State University in San Marcos.
Schreiner deans chose Yolanda Pickard as the recipient of The Part-Time Faculty Award, new this year. Pickard has been an adjunct professor of Spanish and French since 1993.
