Schreiner Announces Spring Sports Awards
Softball - Academic
Toman Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Region
Schreiner Softball junior Patsy Toman has been named First Team Academic All-District by ESPN The Magazine. Only 11 players are chosen for the honor in District VI (South Region) which is made up of more than 60 NCAA Division II (scholarship) and III (non-scholarship) programs in just the region alone. Schreiner is a member of NCAA Division III. Only two pitchers were chosen and only three Division III players earned the award. With this nomination, she now has a chance to earn Academic All-America honors.
The award is based on a combination of academic excellence and playing achievement. A 4.0 student in Exercise Science, Toman had a successful year both in the classroom and on the diamond. Early in the season, Toman was splitting the pitching duties with freshman Becca Hay. Hay was hit by a pitch 11 games into the season and broke her arm. With the season-ending injury to Hay, Toman became the only starting pitcher for Schreiner's emerging softball team. She threw more than 200 innings and compiled a 13-19 record and 4.42 ERA for a Mountaineer team that had it's best season in recent memory, winning 10 games and finishing fourth in the ASC West. Not surprisingly, Toman earlier earned American Southwest Conference Academic All-Conference recognition as well. Toman also batted .250 on the season. Prior to 2008, Toman had never started a college game during her career. The academic All-Region and All-American awards are selected by CoSIDA, which is national organization of Sports Information Directors.

Together, as the #1 doubles team, they were one of the best tandems in the ASC West, rolling to six wins in seven ASC West matches. They finished the season at 6-5 overall.
