Schreiner Mountaineer Center set to ‘top off' Nov 7

Schreiner University’s new Mountaineer Center for Health and Fitness moves closer to completion with a “topping off” ceremony at 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7. The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be served.

“Topping off” is a traditional ceremony marking the completion of a building’s framework and roof. Those who wish to sign the last beam in place will be able to so via a scissor lift.

The 27,000 square foot, $9 million first phase of the $20 million Mountaineer Center project also includes renovations to Schreiner’s Edington gym, resurfacing of the tennis courts, improvements to the pool and a new practice soccer field. The project, under local builder J.M. Lowe, continues on time and within budget, and is expected to be ready for students in March 2009. The project was made possible through generous support from individuals and organizations, notably the The Cailloux Foundation.

“We celebrate this milestone in the construction of our Mountaineer Fitness Center,” said Dr. Tim Summerlin, Schreiner president. “The JM Lowe team has done a great job of staying on track on this key project, as this ‘topping off’ ceremony illustrates. What fun to get a close look at the progress along with generous friends who have helped make it possible and our students who will soon be enjoying its services!”

As Schreiner’s enrollment continues to rise toward the University’s goal of 1,200 students, Schreiner is working to insure that the University’s infrastructure keeps pace. The University recently broke ground on a new freshman residence facility to open in 2009, in time for the Schreiner class of 2013.  The Faulkner Residence Hall is a joint venture between Donna and Royce Faulkner and Schreiner University.
