UTSA to host second Texas Water Symposium Nov 13
The second in the annual series of symposia on Texas water issues will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 13, in Auditorium Room, number MB 0.104 on the ground floor of the Main Building at The University of Texas-San Antonio 1604 campus. Free parking will be available and refreshments donated by UTSA will follow the meeting.
Robert Puente, president/CEO of San Antonio Water System, and Doug Miller, chairman of the board of directors of Edwards Aquifer Authority, will be panelists, with Robert Potts moderating. Miller and Puente will address issues associated with the Edwards Aquifer, its productivity and conservation in relation to population growth in the region, and policy and efforts to acquire alternate sources of water.
The symposia are co-sponsored by Schreiner University, Texas Tech University, Texas Public Radio and the Hill Country Alliance. UTSA joins them in sponsoring the Nov. 13 symposium.
Puente recently retired after 17 years in the Texas House of Representatives, where he served on the House Natural Resources Committee. He sponsored the landmark Senate Bill 3, which deals with statewide water management and pumping permits for the Edwards Aquifer. He also was involved in the 1993 legislation that created Edwards Aquifer.
Miller was elected to the District 73 seat in the Texas House of Representatives in the Nov. 5 election. He served as water liaison for the City of New Braunfels and Comal County for eight years, and now is Chair of the Board of Directors of the Edwards Aquifer Authority.
The Texas Water Development Board appointed him to serve as a small business representative on the South Central Texas Regional Water Planning Group. He is a former mayor of New Braunfels and served on the city council.
These events are free and open to the public. All of the water forums are taped and aired on Texas Public Radio.
