Schreiner University’s
office of admission and
financial aid will offer
Dollars & Sense, a financial
literacy program for
Schreiner students and
community members. The
program will present six
free 40-minute workshops
lead by Schreiner faculty
members with expertise in
that particular area.
Program organizers ask that
participants bring a brown
bag lunch, paper and pencil.
Drinks and dessert will be
provided.
Dr. Anne Berre and Dr.
Charles Salter designed the
workshop series in
collaboration with student
services and the office of
admission and financial aid.
The workshops will continue
through 2010 and will
address the 12 aspects of
life economics Americans
need to address to build
financial security.
“We want to reach out and
provide our students and the
public with the new rules
that affect their financial
decisions so they can
maintain acceptable
standards of living and make
major purchases such as a
home and affordable
transportation,” Salter
said.
Berre teaches personal
finance and business and
consumer law in Schreiner’s
School of Professional
Studies. Salter teaches
finance, insurance and
investing in the School of
Professional Studies.
Berre will lead three of the
workshops: Put a Pencil to
Your Spending, Monday,
Sept. 22, 2008; Making Your
Money Work for You, Monday,
Nov. 10, 2008; and
Supercharge Your Spending
Power, Monday, Jan. 26,
2009. Salter will
lead the other three
workshops: Credit Management
– What’s Your Score?,
Monday, Oct. 20, 2008;
Insurance? We Don’t Need No
Insurance!, Monday, Feb.
23, 2009; and
Investing--Start Today,
Monday, March 9, 2009.
All the workshops will be at
noon in the Floyd &
Kathleen Cailloux Campus
Activity Center.
“The lack of understanding
which the public has about
the basics of personal
finance has reached a crises
level in our country,” Berre
said. “With Americans losing
their homes at an
unprecedented rate these
last weeks and months, we
have to educate consumers
regarding how to manage
their money and their access
to and use of credit.”
