Hill Country College Fund begins 2009-10
The Schreiner University Hill Country College Fund recently kicked off its annual campaign to raise need-based scholarship funds for Schreiner students from Kerr, Gillespie, Kendall, Bandera, Edwards, Kimble and Real counties.
So far, $163,670 has been raised towards this year’s goal of $550,000—37 percent more than the same time last year. Sixteen thousand dollars was donated to the HCCF at the Sept. 23 kick-off luncheon event.
“The campaign is off to a great start with a lot of work still to be done,” said Lucy Gould, associate director of development for annual giving at Schreiner University. “Many thanks go out to everyone who has contributed to this year’s campaign.”
This year’s campaign chairman is Linda Somerville, vice president of Security State Bank & Trust and co-chair is Beth Johnson, owner of Special Events Coordinator.
Other volunteers working on the campaign are: Sue Steele, public relations officer Bank Of The Hills; Sue Tiemann, broker/president of Commercial Realty Services; Debbie Barron, general manager Adco Advertising; Dolores Vinas, president of the Kerr County Women’s Chamber; Wes Dorman, vice president of wealth management at Broadway Bank; Mike Graxiola, editor and publisher of the Kerrville Daily Times; Chelsea Lane Barrington, administrative assistant at Schreiner University and Dr. William Woods, dean of the school of liberal arts at Schreiner University.
Dr. Charlie McCormick, Schreiner’s vice president for academic affairs and the keynote speaker at the luncheon, observed that communities with universities have many more quality-of-life advantages than those without. He also said that colleges and their communities sustained each other. Guests also heard from Schreiner junior LeeAnn Farish, a business education major, about what it means to be an HCCF recipient.
