Polar Bear Challenge
raises
$25K for scholarships
Thirty-four folks from Schreiner University, the Kerrville area
and Freeport, Texas, greeted the new year by plunging down a
slide into the Guadalupe River on Jan. 1, as part of the annual
Polar Bear Challenge. This year’s Polar Bears raised $25,000 for
Schreiner’s
Hill Country College Fund.
Every year, the Polar Bear Challenge, hosted by the
Mo-Ranch Conference Center,
benefits a different local charity. For both 2008 and 2009, the
recipient was HCCF, which provides need-based tuition grants to
Schreiner students from Kerr, Gillespie, Bandera, Kendall,
Kimble Edwards and Real counties.
This year’s polar bears took the
plunge into water that was 10 degrees warmer than last year’s 42
degrees, and the weather was in the mid-50s and sunny. |

Paco Espinoza raised the most money, $8,000. Grant Schlunegger
had the longest slide at 49 feet and 7-year-old Grant
Schlunegger was the youngest Polar Bear.
“Schreiner is so grateful to Mo-Ranch for allowing us to benefit
from this great annual event for the second year in a row,” Mark
Tuschak, Schreiner’s vice president for advancement and public
affairs said. “My hat’s off to all the sliders, who are better
persons than I to expose themselves to such frigid conditions to
benefit Hill Country students who attend Schreiner.”
