Schreiner University will host
Expanding Your Horizons, an annual conference for girls in the 6th
through 8th grades, on Saturday, Nov. 21, on the University campus.
The annual event is co-sponsored by Schreiner and the American Association
of University Women. Check-in will be 9-9:45 a.m. at the Floyd & Kathleen
Cailloux Campus Activity Center. The deadline for registration is Friday,
November 13. Students can register through their schools or register and pay
on line from the Expanding Your Horizons Web site at
www.schreiner.edu/eyh. For more information, email Dr. Diana Comuzzie,
professor of biology and dean of the Robert B. Trull School of Sciences and
Mathematics, Schreiner University, at
comuzzie@schreiner.edu.
EYH conferences are designed to give girls in middle school and opportunity
to explore mathematics and sciences as possible areas for high school and
college studies, through small classes and labs. There will be speakers
talking about their areas of expertise and careers, including Dr. Nancy
Alvarez, ophthalmology; Julie Brandt, RVT, RDCS, vascular technologist and
diagnostic cardiac sonographer; Tara Bushnoe, ecologist; Dr. Shelly Cole,
Department of Genetics, Southwest Foundation of Biomedical Research; Debbie
Gonzalez, accountant; Annette Jones, nurse/midwife; Pam Lewis, scientific
researcher; Dr. Susan Longacre, geologist and oil industry consultant; Dr.
Lena Rippstein, program developer and director of BSN nursing at Schreiner;
Dr. Kerri Truelock, obstetrician and gynecologist; and Christen Longoria,
engineer.
Dr. Comuzzie, the conference director, has been visiting area schools. She
heard from the mother of a student that the student was excited about EYH
and the “fun things” the girls attending would get to do.
“The mom said with some amazement that she told her husband anything that
got their daughter that excited about science and math, they were going to
do,” Comuzzie said. “And that is exactly what we are trying to do: get girls
excited about studying science and mathematics. Come have fun with us!” |
