Coffeehouse offers tributes to Texas and Mendoza

Schreiner University’s Texas Music Coffeehouse series will open a new season at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 1, with a program honoring Texas music and a tribute to 20th century guitarist and Tejano singer Lydia Mendoza. The performances will in The Lion’s Den in the Floyd & Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center on the Schreiner campus.

Singer/songwriters Austin-based Adam Carroll ( and Kerrville native Owen Temple ( will perform a Tribute to Texas Music. Carroll, whose lyrics have been compared to those of the legendary John Prine, released his latest CD in February, “Live at Flipnotics.” Temple’s latest release is “Dimes and Dollars,” which a Chicago reviewer called “an American travel album.”

Terri Sharp ( will offer the tribute to Mendoza. Sharp’s song “Wild Streak,” co-written with Hank Williams Jr. in 1987, was awarded a gold record. Currently, most of her songwriting and singing is done in Spanish.
