Texas Heritage Music Day at Schreiner Sept. 24

KERRVILLE, Texas—The Texas Heritage Music Foundation is proud to announce that the 14th annual Texas Heritage Music Day (formerly the Texas Heritage Living History Day) will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 24, at the Robbins-Lewis Pavilion on Schreiner University campus in Kerrville. The event is billed as “Another Way of Learning Using Stories and Songs.” The Texas Folklore Society and THMF will co-host a panel on the songs of Texas from 4-6 p.m. in the historic Union Church on the festival grounds. All events are free and open to the public.

Texas Jazz and Slim Ritchie perform at the 2009 Texas Heritage Living History Day (now Texas Heritage Music Day) at Schreiner University. The event is co-sponsored by Texas Heritage Music Foundation and Schreiner’s Center for Innovative Learning.

Texas Heritage Music Day is part of the new Texas Song Series, which kicked off Aug. 5-7 with a songwriter’s festival in Con-Can and continues Sept. 1 at the Texas Music Coffeehouse on the Schreiner campus. Adam Carroll and Owen Temple will perform at the coffeehouse and during Texas Heritage Music Day.

On the day itself, more than 50 performers and presenters will be spread throughout the park to entertain and educate. Presentations will include Aztec dancing, chuck wagons, Native American exhibits and stories, Texas singers and songwriters and more. Central to the event will be the annual noon tribute to former Kerrville resident and “Father of Country Music” Jimmie Rodgers. Food and drinks will be available for sale at the event.

The day also will feature free field trips for students and there is grant money available courtesy of The Cailloux Foundation for schools that need help with transportation. State Farm Insurance is providing take-home educators’ packets that are available to all teachers.

Texas Heritage Music Day is co-sponsored by THMF and Center for Innovative Learning at Schreiner University.
