Crop Walk at Schreiner will help Haiti, local community

There will be a CROP Hunger Walk at Schreiner University on Saturday, Feb. 27, starting with a 9:30 a.m. registration at Robbins-Lewis Pavilion. The walk will start from there at 10 a.m.

Crop walk participants collect pledges to raise money for various charitable causes. Those who want to make pledges or sign up to walk can do so online by going to and searching under “Find Walk.” Two local teams are listed: Team FBC from First Baptist Church and Schreiner University.

A portion of the money raised this year will go to Haiti relief; locally, Christian Assistance Ministry, St. Vincent de Paul and The Salvation Army also will receive funds. Participants also are asked to help assemble hygiene kits to send to Haiti, which will include hand towels, soap, combs, toothbrushes and other items. There are CROP Hunger Walks all over the country under the aegis of Church World Service, an interdenominational group that offers sustainable self-help and development, disaster relief and refugee assistance around the world. CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty.

The February 27 walk will include activities sponsored by Schreiner campus ministry students to highlight hunger-related issues.

“Our goal this year is to raise $3,000, which the Trull Foundation of Palacious, Texas will match,” said the Rev. Gini Norris-Lane, Schreiner campus minister. “We also hope to have at least 100 walkers.”
