Schreiner Shack-a-Thon: Have fun doing good

Schreiner University’s annual Shack-a-Thon will be Friday, Sept. 10, in the campus free speech zone between the dining hall and the Floyd & Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center. Student organizations will construct cardboard shacks in which at least one student will be present from 3-9 p.m. During that time, the public is invited to visit and donate money to the “panhandlers.” Students also can raise funds from other members of their organizations, bake sales and other fundraisers, and sponsorships. There will be a movie among the shacks at 9 p.m., and students are encouraged to bring card and board games, guitars and sleeping bags.

All proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity. On Saturday, Sept. 11, the students will volunteer helping Habitat build a new home.

Shack-a-Thon is a joint venture of the Student Volunteer Center, the Student Activities Board and Phi Delta Theta. There will be sign-up sheets in the Student Volunteer Center on the first floor of CCAC for groups that want to participate in the event. Shack locations will be determined by lottery. The deadline for volunteering to work on the Habitat house is Wednesday, Sept. 8.

For more information, call or e-mail Elizabeth Loggie, volunteer coordinator at 792-7211 or ehloggie@schreiner.edu.

UPDATE:  The Shack-a-Thon was a huge success!
