Nonfiction Book Club to discuss Bahadur’s Pirates of Somalia
The next meeting of the Schreiner University Nonfiction Book Club will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the Scarle-Philips Room of the William Logan Library on the University campus. The group will “The Pirates of Somalia: Inside Their Hidden World” by Jay Bahadur. Scott Conard, assistant professor of graphic design, will lead the discussion.
“The Pirates of Somalia” is an inside look at the current resurgence of piracy, which first came to American attention with the hijacking of the American cargo ship by Somali pirates in 2009. However, the problem is older than that. Bahadur, a Canadian, began his investigation in northeastern Somalia in 2008. According to New York Times reviewer Joshua Hammer said of “The Pirates of Somalia,” “Bahadur has gone deep in exploring the causes of this seaborne crime wave, charting its explosive growth and humanizing the brigands who have eluded some of the world’s most powerful navies.”
The Nonfiction Book Club is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by Schreiner’s Center for Innovative Learning. For more information about Schreiner and the CIL, visit the website at www.schreiner.edu.
