Schreiner Recycles! And Has a Party!

Schreiner's new recycling program is already in gear, as anyone can see by the sudden explosion of recycling boxes in campus buildings. This is a student-centered initiative in which the University has partnered with Greenstar Recycling in San Antonio, who provide the recycling bins and pick up materials after they have been sorted Schreiner Environment Management staff and student volunteers. The amount of waste hauled off-campus has already been reduced by 25 percent.

“Schreiner Senate is excited to celebrate the contributions of the student body to our University's new recycling effort,” said William Keaton, Student Senate president. “The Senate is proud to help contribute to this effort, and happy to try to find ways to encourage our student body to increase our contributions to Schreiner Environmental Impact.”

The Schreiner Recycles! program will kick off officially with a launch party 11 a.m.-1 p.m., on Earth Day, Friday, April 20, on The Commons. Included in the celebration will be goodies such as buttons, bags and T-shirts, free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Monte, some remarks on the environment by Dr. Chris Distal, the official unveiling of Schreiner Recycles gator and wagon and a special appearance by Phil ‘n’ the Blanks.

"Schreiner Recycles is an important initiative that demonstrates our commitments to both environmental stewardship and collaboration," said Bill Muse, vice president of administration and finance. "The students have advocated for an effective recycling program for some time and their serious intent is borne out in their participation: in helping to plan the program, in staffing the recycling wagon, in helping to fund the program by paying for individual recycling containers for dorm rooms and apartments and in the cumulative impact of the recycling efforts of all of the students. The results are already impressive, and we are just getting started." William Keaton president of Schreiner Student Senate.
