Dante Talk at Schreiner Mansion for Poetry Month

Schreiner University will sponsor Kerstin Blum with a talk about the 14th-century Italian poet Dante Alighieri from 5-6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 4, at Schreiner University’s Schreiner Mansion Historic Site and Education Center, 226 Earl Garrett St., in Kerrville. There will be a reception before the talk begins at 5:30 p.m.
Blum is a native of Germany who studied languages, literature and journalism at Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg and at the University of South Carolina as part of a study abroad program that introduced her to the field of comparative literature. Her talk will focus on the continued relevance of Dante’s “Divine Comedy” in modern thought, stressing the “transatlantic vitality of a European classic.”

“I'm delighted to have been invited to speak at Schreiner Mansion,” Blum said. “As a native German it is exciting to reconnect with the legacy of enterprising immigrants, especially since this kind of transatlantic transition is one of the fundamental ideas of my talk about how a medieval Italian classic like Dante's ‘Divine Comedy’ made its way across the Atlantic with the first European travelers.”

“For the past two years Blum has been busy giving public lectures on art history, inspiring her audiences with a diverting mix of historic facts, colorful anecdotes, interesting technical information, and insightful observations on the way art shaped the way we see the world today,” said Kat Walker, one of the event’s organizers.

The Mansion is an historic building without elevator access to the second floor, where the presentation will take place. Although this is a free event, reservations are required because of limited space is. To reserve, call to reserve: 830-896-8633.
