American Heart Association recognizes Schreiner University as a fit-friendly company
The American Heart Association has recognized Schreiner as a fit-friendly company and has awarded the university gold status certification.
The American Heart Association’s fit-friendly certification program recognizes employers who go above and beyond when it comes to their employees’ health. Fit-friendly companies reach gold and platinum level status by implementing various activities and programs to encourage physical activity, nutrition and culture enhancements such as on-site walking routes, healthy food choices in cafeterias and vending machines, annual employee health risk assessments and other online tools.
“We received the gold level because we meet six areas of criteria in physical activity including the onsite facility at Mountaineer Fitness Center, free activity classes, the Walk and Run club, information and email, incentives, two criteria in nutrition and more,” said Lucrecia Flores, director of health and wellness. “It’s important to be active to reduce the risks of disease (heart, stroke, cancer, diabetes, etc.) also to reduce blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity, osteoporosis, absenteeism, and improve productivity, overall health such as mental, physical and emotional.”
The fit-friendly program is a part of the American Heart Association’s “My Heart. My Life” platform, aimed at educating communities about the lifestyle changes necessary to lead a heart healthy life.
