Schreiner University has named sophomore basketball player Keenan Gumbs of Cibolo and sophomore softball player Alyssa Maki of Houston as its athletes of the year for 2016-17.
Gumbs helped lead the men’s basketball team to its first regular season Southern Collegiate Athletic Association (SCAC) title. He was named First Team All-SCAC and led the team in scoring at 14 points per game (eighth in the conference). The Steele High School graduate was 10th in the league in field goal percentage (.474) and 11th in assists (2.7/game).
He is president of the Schreiner Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and he has been named to both the Dean’s and President’s lists for superior academic performance while majoring in exercise science.
Maki helped lead the Schreiner softball team to its best win percentage since 2009. She was named First Team All-West Region by the National Fast-pitch Coaches Association, and selected First Team All-SCAC. She placed second in the league in hits, triples, runs, total bases, stolen bases and slugging percentage. She was third in runs scored and was fifth in RBIs. She ended the year with a .413 batting average, and set school records in batting average, triples, runs scored, hits and stolen bases.
Maki, a biology major and a graduate of Clear Brook High School, is a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and a has also been honored for academic achievement.
