Dr. Stephanie Ramirez, Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at Seminary of the Southwest and Schreiner alumna, will be guest speaker for Schreiner University’s commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 12 starting at 10 a.m.
The Reverend Dr. John Williams, Chaplain and Director of Church Relations at Austin College in Sherman, Texas, will speak at the baccalaureate service on Friday May 11, which starts at 5 p.m. in the Schreiner University Event Center. This event is open to the public.
“We are delighted that the Rev. Dr. John Williams and Dr. Stephanie Ramirez will honor us as our Baccalaureate and Commencement speakers respectively,” President McCormick said. “The Rev. Williams, whose daughter is a May 2018 graduate of Schreiner, provides us an opportunity to affirm the importance of our church-relatedness, and Dr. Ramirez provides us an opportunity to model for our graduates the possibilities that await for them beyond Schreiner University.”
Dr. Ramirez graduated from Schreiner University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Spanish. She completed her Master of Arts in Community Counseling in 2009 from St. Mary’s University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision in 2014, also from St. Mary’s University.
Her doctorate is in Counselor Education and Supervision with a specialization in Relational Cultural Theory and Social Justice. Outside of teaching, Stephanie is a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor. She has counseled clients in a variety of settings including providing counseling and advocacy services for undocumented women experiencing domestic violence, worked with senior adults and caregivers, and has recently worked with at-risk youth.
Ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament by Grace Presbytery in 1988, Dr. Williams has served the Presbyterian Church (USA) at congregational, presbytery, synod, and General Assembly levels as well as through participation in ecumenical activities. He has served as Director of Church Relations at Austin College since 1993 and as College Chaplain since August 1, 2004. He was installed to the William E. Elliott, Jr. Chair in Christian Ministry in April 2005.
According to Registrar Darlene Bannister, Schreiner University students will earn 7 Masters of Education, 5 Masters of Business Administration and 185 Baccalaureate degrees.
Commencement seating is limited to ticket holders, but the ceremony will be broadcast live over the Internet on the University’s social media accounts. It may be viewed online or in the ballrooms of the Floyd and Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center ballrooms.
