Derek D., graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology, and is currently taking a year off before graduate schoolI am a person of connections. I believe that a connection is made when there is a transfer of experience and understanding from one person to another. My education in biology has expanded my appreciation for this. I want to connect with people on a deeper level and help them by becoming a medical doctor. In my time at Schreiner, I have made many of these connections that I’m certain will be everlasting. Many of them are with professors, students, faculty and staff. While attending SU, one summer experience granted me a connection that I will never forget:
Through the experience of a small university and substantive letters of recommendation from my faculty, Dr. Diana Comuzzie and Lesa Presley, I was able to make a connection with the director of a summer program at Baylor College of Medicine called the SMART program. From the director’s relatable undergraduate experience at a small university, I was offered acceptance into an internship program at one of the leading medical schools in the nation, and an opportunity to gain knowledge through a rigorous cancer research experience.
Furthermore, I made lasting friendships with an amazing group of diverse individuals.
After Schreiner, I plan on attending medical school and becoming a pediatric oncologist. From my experience here and at Baylor COM, I have grown in my passion for working with children and I want to help them in the best way I know possible.
