Comuzzie inspires students with love of science

Fascinated by animal behavior, she grew up to earn a B.S. degree in biology at the University of Texas at Austin,
a master’s degree in biology at Southwest Texas State University, and her doctorate in zoology at Texas A&M
University. Her thesis was on Central Texas sparrow calls and her dissertation detailed her research on sea turtle communication and behavior.

Comuzzie’s post-doctoral work at the University of
Kansas extended models of animal alarm to human vocalizations. Then, at the Southwest Foundation for
Biomedical Research, she studied baboon vocalizations as a measure of their psychological well being. Now serving as dean of Schreiner’s Trull School of Sciences and Mathematics, Comuzzie has taught biology at SU for 10 years. But her enthusiasm for science reaches beyond
