Kerrville
artist Evelyn (Doran) Hickey ’61 began
painting after attending Schreiner College and TexasChristian University. Her subject matter has evolved from painting flowers in watercolor to creating colorful, expressionistic faces and abstracts. She currently works in acrylics, mixed media collage and batik wax on oriental papers. She also designs and paints quarry tiles, creates colorful mosaics, and creates one-of-a-kind jewelry using semi-precious stones. One thing that has remained constant through the years is her use of vibrant color. “Color enhances my enjoyment of life,” Hickey said. “The use of color in my art allows me to express emotion in a precise language that the viewer can feel as well as see.” ![]() In December 2001, Hickey opened 1550 Gallery in Kerrville, which has earned
a reputation as “the premier contemporary art gallery in the Texas
Hill Country.” The gallery features paintings, sculpture, pottery,
art glass and jewelry from many artists, including Hickey. Her studio is
located in the gallery. “The object of my art work is not to make
a statement, but rather to capture the beauty and essence of the color and
form of the subject. I want the viewer to experience a new way of seeing
and then enjoy the total composition.” For more info on the 1550 Gallery, visit www.1550gallery.com. |
