
Dr. William (Bill) Campbell ’40 recently contacted
SFSA with an update on his varied and distinguished career. Bill attended
Schreiner Institute from 1937-40, then went on to serve in the U.S.
Navy in WWII and in the Korean War with the U.S. Air Force. He was
awarded a B.A. from Davidson College in 1947 and a Ph.D. from the
University of Texas in 1953. A recipient of numerous honors and awards,
including a 1965 Fulbright award to India, a listing in Who’s
Who in America, and recognition in Who’s Who in Southern Education,
Bill also served in the Peace Corps in 1989-91. He has taught for
many years in higher education, including stints at Mississippi State
College for Women, The University of The South, and University College,
Oxford. In 1994 Bill returned to Schreiner for one year as a lecturer
in history. He currently resides in Austin.
James P. House ’45 of Fort Worth is enjoying
his retirement from Lockheed Martin where he worked until 1993. After
a year at Schreiner Institute, he did graduate work at Southern Methodist
University in nuclear engineering and completed a master’s degree
in business at Texas Christian University. James hopes to see some
of his classmates at Recall this spring...which may surprise some
of them since we mistakenly included him in last summer’s In
Memoriam listing. We are deeply sorry for the error and rejoice that
James is still with us!

Bill Kendrick ’50 and his wife Patty celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary on August 28, 2004, with children and
grandchildren at the family cabin in Cloudcroft, N. M. Bill writes,
“The cabin has been in the family a long time and is where we
spent our honeymoon. Since our kids live in southern California and
Las Vegas and we are still in Dallas, we decided to meet half-way
and have a party.”
John Koonsman ’52 and his wife, Jane recently
celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. They are now retired and
have lived in Dallas for the past 25 years.
Spencer
’52 and Anita Blocker of Midland, celebrated their
51st wedding anniversary in Santa Fe, N.M. on August 15, 2004.
Otto Harrison ’54 married Kay Pearson of Austin
in 1959. They were together until her death in 2003. They shared 4
children and 8 grandchildren. Otto served two years in the army, 1954-56.
In addition to Schreiner, he also attended the University of Texas,
where he received his B.S. in petroleum engineering in 1959. Otto
retired from Exxon after 38 years of service.

John W. Swain ’62 attended Schreiner University
from 1961 to 1962 and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi
in 1963 majoring in physics and math. In December 1987, he married
Elizabeth Smalley of Austin. John and Elizabeth have 7 grandchildren
and live in Germantown, Tenn.
Benno Bauer ’63 has been ordained as a minister
at Second Baptist Church in Houston. Benno graduated from Texas Lutheran
in 1967 and became a real estate developer in Houston. After retirement,
he became a volunteer for several different organizations including
Second Baptist Church, one of the fastest growing churches in America.
Benno is now on staff as a minister.
Bucky Eckols ’69 is married to Donna, an elementary
school principal. They have two daughters and they operate a working
cattle ranch outside of Liberty, Texas. Bucky is also a lieutenant
with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department, in charge of operations
of the county reserve unit.
Dean H. Krueger ’69, whose ancestors were pioneers
of the Leon Valley and Helotes areas, has been honored by having a
new elementary school named after him in the Wildhorse subdivision
near Helotes. The school overlooks the Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes,
where Dean’s father, grandparents and great-grandparents are
buried. Many generations of the Krueger/Steubing families still reside
in the area, where Dean has been an English/history teacher and school
administrator for over 30 years.
Lee Albin ’70 is busy working on home remodeling
projects and playing music at rest homes and retirement centers in
the San Marcos area. His oldest daughter is close to graduation from
Texas State University—San Marcos, and his younger daughter
is about to graduate from Giddings Independent School District. Meanwhile,
Lee muses, “Looking out the window here in the study I see the
squirrels are tormenting the dogs again. The tank is full, and I hear
a bass calling my name.”
Geoff Stoner ’74 will be fishing again this
winter for the ice team world pan fish championship. Stoner is a professional
guide and fisherman in Wisconsin Rapids and is heard on radio stations
throughout the Midwest. He also writes articles for three outdoor
magazines and two web sites. He will be competing on the 2004 ice
team world championship tour, which consists of eight stops from Devils
Lake, N.D. to Bloomington, Mich. The final stop is in Alexandria,
Minn. and will be broadcast on ESPN.
Louis ’79 and Rosa Linda ’79 Flores Bradley
have relocated along with their 3 children to Panama City, Fla., where
Louis is the hospital administrator for SemperCare Hospital. In addition
to her degree from Schreiner, Rosa Linda also received a degree from
Texas Christian University in 1982.

Steve Daniels ’80 was recently transferred
to Houston where he works for Marathon Oil Company as a senior petroleum
landman. Steve and wife Amy have two sons, Jordan, 13 years old, and
Taylor, 8 years old. Amy is a junior high teacher and coach at Beckendorff
Junior High in Katy, Texas. Steve keeps in touch with Schreiner former
students Mark Talbot ’80, McAllen; Bill Ward ’80, Richmond;
Randy Walker ’80, Graham; Mark Holland ’79, Houston; and
Randy Broyles ’80, Conroe.
Michael Giddens ’86 and Shedell Giddens ’86,
proud parents of Abigail, age 5, and Garrison, age 2, will be starting
a commercial construction project in downtown Boerne in late October
2005. Three new retail spaces totaling approximately 5,500 square
feet will be built, along with an 11-room New Orleans-style hotel.
The Giddens currently own the Christmas Shoppe on Main Street in Boerne.

Manda
Lopez ’92 and Todd R. Klein were married on August
28, 2004 at Westmont Christian Church in Lubbock, Texas. The bride
is a ’92 graduate of Schreiner College and a graduate of The
Center for Public Service at Texas Tech University. She is currently
employed as executive director of the National Migrant and Seasonal
Head Start Association in Washington D.C. The groom is a graduate
of Texas Tech University, where he earned bachelor’s degrees
in political science and philosophy. He is currently selfemployed
as a political and government consultant. The couple honeymooned in
Spain and are currently living in Arlington, Va.
Sonia Muñoz ’91 is serving her second
term on the New Braunfels City Council, District 1, where she is involved
with helping to improve city streets and infrastructure. She is also
working closely with Project Blast, a program to reduce drop-out rates
among at-risk youth. In 2004 Sonia was given the Sumner’s Non-Attorney
Distinguished Alumni Award—a major recognition for her career
of public service. In addition, Sonia has been involved for over 15
years with all aspects of the amusement park business and is currently
working with NBGS International on projects in China and the U.S.
Sonia married Jeffrey Gill in 2001 and they have a little girl, Felicity
Nicole.
Susan (Tooker) ’93 and James Morgan are proud
to announce the arrival of their twins, Lee and Lily Paige, on March
4, 2004. They live in Yardley Pa., and everyone is doing well. They
are planning to attend Recall in April 2005 with the whole family.
Lucy Ortiz Cavazos ’93 was recently appointed
by Texas Governor Rick Perry to the board of directors of the Lower
Colorado River Authority. LCRA manages the water supply in 10 counties
of Central Texas and protects the quality of water in the Lower Colorado
and its tributaries. Lucy also serves as the Assistant District Attorney
for the 216th Judicial District.
Michelle Moreno ’94 has been named head volleyball
coach at San Marcos High School where she beat out intense competition
from across the state for the position. Moreno was a star volleyball
player during her years at Schreiner. She moved to San Marcos, married,
and had a child. In 1998, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree
in exercise and sports science at Texas State University–San
Marcos.
Dr. Lawrence ’94 and Liquita ’92 Thompson
proudly announce the birth of Lawrence Thompson III on Sept. 9, 2004
at 4:15 p.m. Liquita is a current member of the university’s
Board of Trustees.
Cpl. William T. “Bill” Alsobrook ’94
has been serving our country near Samarra, Iraq since February 2004.
He expects to leave Iraq for good in April and return to his wife
Beth, in Laurinburg, N.C. Bill plans to continue his military career
and retire from the Army in about 12 years. In his spare time (!!!)
he is attending the University of North Carolina at Pembroke where
Beth is also completing her master’s degree in public administration.
Duffy Slade ’94 and his wife Leigh live on
Lake Lewisville in Frisco. Their daughter, Ryann Merit, was born April
13, 2004. Duffy works for Golden International in Plano, and Leigh
is a pricing manager with Vitro Packaging, Mexico.
Weldon West ’95 and Stacey Green ’94
adopted their daughter, Karly, on April 17, 2003, when she was two
days old. Weldon has been teaching second grade in the Somerset ISD
for the past eight years. Stacey has been working at Frost National
Bank in San Antonio for the past ten years and is currently a vice
president in the trust oil and gas department.
Karin ’96 and Richy Carpenter ’96 have
two children, Corley and Koy. Karin is at home with the children and
also coaches club volleyball from December to May in Floresville.
Richy is a car sales manager at Gunn Pontiac/GMC.
Hale Butcher Schaleben ’97 and Tracy Jane Andrews ’95
married on October 11, 2003. Hale and Tracy met at Schreiner
in fall 1992. Since graduating from Schreiner, Hale has worked as
a ranch manager, hunting guide, assistant in a fine art gallery, and
then at Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. headquarters as a wildlife
technician. Tracy worked mostly in environmental education before
attending law school at the University of Texas. She graduated from
U.T. Law with Honors, Order of the Coif, in May 2002, and then worked
as a Texas Assistant Attorney General in the Natural Resources Department.
In May 2004, Hale and Tracy moved to Traverse City, in Northern Mich.
(where snow is measured in feet, not inches). Tracy works for a public
interest environmental law firm; Hale is still looking for a job,
spending time taking care of Tracy’s old dog Rupert and his
lab puppy Hondo. He is also perfecting the ultimate fly fishing cast
and chopping firewood for the long, cold winter ahead.
F. John Bradford IV ‘98 received his Bachelor
of Science degree in maritime administration from Texas A&M University
in Galveston on Aug. 14, 2004. John writes, “I have finally
hooked the big one, and I owe a tremendous thanks to the faculty and
staff at Schreiner University for preparing me for this journey. I
could not have gotten to this point without my experiences in Kerrville.”
Jeanna
Martinez ‘98 and husband (Manuel) Manny recently became
parents of baby number three, Michael Patton in March 2004. He joins
Lauren, 4, and Edward, 2. Jeanna graduated from Incarnate Word in
May 2004 with a master’s degree in multidisciplinary sciences.
Jeanna is still teaching chemistry in San Antonio ISD. Manny owns
MDM Painting and Renovations and is currently doing both new home
painting and older home renovations. They live in San Antonio.
Chris Sanchez ’99 married Christina Walsh of
Olympia, Washington in Austin on June 19, 2004. The event was attended
by Schreiner former students, including best man Andres Gutierrez
’99; groomsman Lalo Gutierrez ’99; groomsman Ritchie Mercer
’02; Ricardo Suta ’98; Ray Tena ’99; Jim Russell
‘98; Sharon Slubar ’98; Lucy Van Goethem ‘02; Theresa
(Van Goethem) Meyers ’96 and J.C. Carpenter ’99. The couple
lives in Austin.
Linda Arnold ’99 and Tom King ’96 were
married on July 3, 2004 in the Union Church on the Schreiner University
campus, in downtown Kerrville.
Trey Gourley ’99 is working at Neiman Marcus,

Steffany
Jackson ’99 has recently moved to El Paso to join former
Schreiner softball coaches, Kathleen and James Rodriguez. She will
work as their graduate assistant at the University of Texas–El
Paso where she is pursuing a master’s degree in kinesiology.

Lindsay (Slade)
’00 and her husband Stephen Sellery live in Orlando,
Florida. Their son Slade Chapman, was born August 19, 2003. Lindsay
is a stay-at-home mom, and Stephen is director of sports marketing
for The Golf Channel.
Jill Reno ’00 is achieving national prominence
as a jewelry designer with her “Jill Reno Collection”
line of oneof- a-kind pieces. Jill has shown her work around the country
and has been featured in many commercial and media venues. To see

Dusty McDonald ’01 completed his master of
science degree in aquatic biology at Texas State University–
San Marcos in December 2003. He currently works as a life history
biologist for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Coastal Fisheries Division
at the Perry R. Bass Marine Fisheries Research Center in Palacios,
Texas.
Dani Griffith ’01 recently sold illustrations
for a first book. The book is called “The Camp Fire Ain’t
Out Yet” by Kent Stockton and will be published by Cowboy Miner
Productions. Keep your eye out for it in bookstores or on amazon.com.
David Crotty ’01 is back at Schreiner working
on his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in management information
systems and will graduate in May 2006.
Sally Peña ’02 is working as a counselor
at Meadowlands Children’s Home in Boerne and is pursuing a master’s
degree in recreational management from Texas State University.
Heather Kelly ’03 is in her second year of
teaching in Ingram at Tom Moore High School. This year she is teaching
geography, world history and German. She has also just finished her
fifth year as a supervisor at Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels.
Catherine Newlin ’03 is living in Houston and
teaching first grade at a private school. She is a Texas state certified
teacher.
Chris ’03 and Mandy ’03 (Fleetwood) Campbell live
in Waco, where she is a music composition major at Baylor University
and is working on a doctorate in educational psychology. Mandy is
signing a record deal with Feverdream Records out of Houston and will
begin recording a new CD in October. In a few months, she will be
featured at www.feverdreamrecords.com.
Both lead music at Bellmead church just north of Waco.
Scott Ivy ’04 is in his first semester at Texas
State University–San Marcos pursuing a Master of Arts degree
in history.
Jarrett Aldrich ‘04 was notified in June 2004
that he was the winner of the Presbyterian Church USA writing contest
on the theme “Campus Ministry Touched Me.” Jarrett’s
essay was ranked in the top 15 in the country by an expert panel of
judges and can be read at www.pcusa.org/highereducation.
