Of this year’s men’s basketball team, Coach Thirman Dimery
said, “We’re way ahead of schedule and playing together
well…There’s more dedication this year and it’s
going to pay off for us.”
This year the men’s team has added a junior varsity squad and
will use this team as a tool to improve the program’s younger
players.
Assistant Coach Troy House is a new addition. “I’m looking
for Troy to be a new face for the team and really help with the strategy
of the game,” said Dimery.
The men were to begin their season on Tuesday Nov. 23 against the
University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. When asked about
his first game against
UIW, Coach Dimery said, “I hope we can take it from them. They
were a bigger team last year, but this year we have the depth and
it will be a good game.”
At Schreiner, Midnight Madness marked the beginning of basketball
season. The purpose of the event was to meet this year’s men’s
and women’s basketball teams.
Fans
also enjoyed watching a slam dunk contest, a three-point shootout,
a skills and drills competition for the point guards and two inter-team
scrimmages. Activities included a student cash grab where
students from the audience were selected at random, blindfolded, and
then led onto the court where over $250 laid waiting to be picked
up by the eager participants.
Another student event included a half-court shot with a $500 cash
prize.
