Hard
Work, Steady Improvement
The Schreiner
University Mountaineer women’s basketball team won 83-43 in
their first scrimmage of the season against Palo Alto College on Nov.
8 in Kerrville.
The Mountaineers
showed their fans a different team from the years past. The ball was
passed around for open shots, the defense was more intense, and the
ball was being taken care of on the dribble. During the scrimmage,
Schreiner’s returning players were able to display their new
skills acquired in the off season. The freshmen also impressed everyone
with their comfort level on the court.
Of this year’s team, Interim Head Coach Leigh Anne Owens ’02
said, “They’re working hard…they look a lot different
from last year’s squad. “Our goal is to improve from day
one to the last day…if we can do that we’ve accomplished
what we set out to do,” Owens added.
The campus can’t wait for the first game of the season after
this performance. Coach Owens said of the game, “I was
impressed with the girls…I saw a few things that we need to
improve on before our first game, but we will do well against
TLU (Texas Lutheran University).”
The Mountaineer women’s basketball team opened the season against
TLU on Friday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Edington Center on the Schreiner
University campus.

SU
Offensive Duo Receive Volleyball Honors
On
November 10, the American Southwest Conference Headquarters in Richardson,
Texas, released the 2004 All- Conference and All-Division team awards.
Senior Alison Staley (Marion, Texas) was awarded a spot on the ASC
West Division First Team, while sophomore teammate Emiliana Patlan

Over the course of the season, Staley and Patlan accumulated some

Mountaineer Women’s Soccer Mountaineers Look To 2005
The Mountaineer women’s soccer team completed its season on
October 31 against Austin College. During the season the Mountaineers
were 1-16
overall and just 1-12 in the American Southwest conference.
As it was last year, Schreiner was plagued by injuries. The worst
of these was losing senior defender Virginia Grijalba due to a stress
fracture in her left knee. It was the loss of Grijalba after nine
games into the season that dropped the Mountaineer roster to 12 members.
Despite the loss and the lack of depth, the Mountaineers were able
to keep the remainder of the games in check. They actually played
stronger defense in the second half, holding opponents to eight fewer
goals as compared to their first half scores.
In the off season the Mountaineers will look to heal their injuries
and improve their roster for the 2005 season.
