The Schreiner campus had reason to celebrate on Oct. 17
with the installation of Dr. Tim Summerlin as the university’s
fifth president and the dedication of the Kathleen Cox Cailloux Hall.
The
day kicked off with the dedication of Cailloux Hall. Faculty, staff,
students, trustees, community members, Cailloux family members and
others gathered in front of the new building to hear speakers praise
the Cailloux family for their generosity to the university.
With the stunning brick building as the backdrop, Schreiner President
Emeritus Dr. Sam Junkin told the audience:
“How exciting it is when God’s purpose for making all
things
new gets recognized in the gift of a magnificent building
such as this one.” Following the dedication and a reception,
guests proceeded to Dietert Auditorium for a service of worship and
the installation of Summerlin. Junkin, Board chairman Warren Ferguson,
former president of Lamar University Bill Franklin and chairman of
the presidential search committee Tom Currie participated in the service.
Summerlin spoke of responsibility. “At this time in Schreiner
University’s history, we have such an opportunity and obligation.
Too many before us have given too much for us to fail in that challenge.
The old Captain, who decided the democratic polity of
the Presbyterian Church made it a good partner to help manage his
institute, is watching. The host of teachers, who made their homes
available to young boys, some of whom were exercising
their last chance to find direction in their lives, are watching.
The many faithful who have been moved to share their treasure, whether
it was modest or vast, are watching. The believers who knew that Schreiner
had a more particular destiny than merely to
become another community college are watching. In the face of these
witnesses, we can do no other than claim our mission.” Following
the service and installation, guests attended a reception complete
with food and live music.
