Senior earns award Senior Elizaveta Zheganina was
one of three college students to receive
the first annual San
Antonio Colleges
and Universities
Placement Association (SACUPA)

Achievement Award.
Zheganina was recognized
on April 16
during a luncheon at Trinity University.
She received a $500 award. Recipients
were chosen based on their transcripts,
resumes, letters of recommendation
and one-page essays that described how
they have utilized or plan to utilize
Career Services to achieve their career

Sumners Foundation’s nine trustees
interviewed 15
sophomores and
then chose five to
be Schreiner’s
2004–05 scholars.They are: August Blackburn, Corrina Fox, Megan McDonald, Kristen Morton and Delma Thompson. Schreiner’s senior scholars— Kaleb Kothe, Afton Sands, Shelley Stark and Verlene Wallace—were recognized during the Sumners banquet on April 14 on campus. Schreiner is one of only six universities in Texas and Oklahoma that benefits from the Sumners scholarship program. In addition to receiving an academic scholarship, Sumners scholars are invited to attend seminars and conferences that encourage leadership. ^ back to top ^ |

first annual Mountaineer Leadership
Conference, “New Beginnings in
Leadership,” Feb. 20–21 on campus.

Uhlenhaker. The conference, which was open to all juniors in good academic standing, featured five keynote speakers, several team-building activities and lunch with the board of trustees. The keynote speakers were: Ann Die Hasselmo, Ph.D., managing director, Academic Search Consultation Service; Christopher Avery, Ph.D., president, Partnerwerks; Walter Johnson, engineering program manager, Labinal- Corinth Inc.; William P. Crum, retired Air Force colonel; and Larry Franklin, chairman, Harte-Hanks Inc. According to conference coordinator and associate professor of English Dr. William Woods, the goal of the conference was to stimulate and develop leadership competencies in participating students that will enrich their university experience and increase their effectiveness in achieving personal and professional goals. “I'm so impressed with how well our student participants did. They really seemed to learn a lot, and I know they took away from the Mountaineer Leadership Conference a wealth of knowledge,” Woods said. ^ back to top ^ |

| Living History
Weekend scheduled The Texas Heritage Living History Weekend will be Sept. 24-26 on the Schreiner campus. The three-day event celebrating Texas heritage and history will kick off Sept. 24 with a day-long event featuring more than 40 performers, presenters and educators. A Texas Heritage Seminar has been planned for Sept. 25 and will feature music scholars and authors. The opening event and seminar are free and open to the public. The weekend will end with a Literacy and Learning Benefit Concert on Sept. 26 featuring several performers to be announced at a later date. Tickets to the concert are $15. for July 23–24 The Past Is Prologue: A Way of Learning will hold its annual conference on the Schreiner campus July 23–24. U.S. military academy
prep program begins Schreiner will host Greystone
Preparatory School on campus starting
this fall. Greystone offers students
from around the country a one-year
program designed specifically to prepare
them for qualification into one of
the five United States Service
Academies (Annapolis, West Point, the
Air Force Academy, Coast Guard
Academy and Merchant Marine
Academy).Greystone students will be fulltime Schreiner freshmen. These students will enroll in Schreiner calculus, chemistry, American history and English composition & rhetoric courses as well as the Freshman IDST and Physical Education courses. Greystone students will live in L.A. Schreiner Residence Hall and are expected to blend into the campus community as active participants in student activities and events. Aside from the classroom, you can expect to run into Greystone students in the athletic facilities and the ball fields. Sports participation is a required part of the Greystone program. The Greystone Director is David Bailey (pictured above) who retired as a Navy commander this past June. As a “ship-driver,” his service took him around the world and finally back to his alma mater as a faculty member in the Weapons and Systems Engineering Department at the United States Naval Academy. Bailey says, “Greystone is fortunate to be part of the Schreiner community. SU Choir invited to
perform in NYC The Schreiner Choir has been
invited to perform at
Carnegie Hall in New York
City in January 2005.However, there’s one hitch—the 26-member choir must raise $30,000 to go to the Big Apple. Choir director Michael Kahl said about 22 choir members are planning to go on the trip. The cost is $1,500 per person, which includes airfare and hotel. The choir will spend four days in New York, and most of the time will be spent rehearsing. The group will perform Jan. 17, along with several other choirs from across the country. “We will be representing not only Schreiner but the Kerrville community when we perform,” Kahl said. The choir held one fundraiser this spring, which raised about $1,500. Several more fundraisers are being planned for the fall.
