U.S. military academy prep program begins

Schreiner will host Greystone Preparatory School on campus starting this fall. Greystone offers students from around the country a one-year program designed specifically to prepare them for qualification into one of the five United States Service Academies (Annapolis, West Point, the Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy and Merchant Marine Academy).

Greystone students will be fulltime Schreiner freshmen. These students will enroll in Schreiner calculus, chemistry, American history and English composition & rhetoric courses as well as the Freshman IDST and Physical Education courses.

Greystone students will live in L.A. Schreiner Residence Hall and are expected to blend into the campus community as active participants in student activities and events. Aside from the classroom, you can expect to run into Greystone students in the athletic facilities and the ball fields. Sports participation is a required part of the Greystone program. The Greystone Director is David Bailey (pictured above) who retired as a Navy commander this past June. As a “ship-driver,” his service took him around the world and finally back to his alma mater as a faculty member in the Weapons and Systems Engineering Department at the United States Naval Academy.

Bailey says, “Greystone is fortunate to be part of the Schreiner community. Together, we can create a positive environment conducive to learning that only the Texas Hill Country can provide.” To learn more about Greystone Preparatory School, visit www.greystoneprepschool.net.

SU Choir invited to perform in NYC

The Schreiner Choir has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City in January 2005.

However, there’s one hitch—the 26-member choir must raise $30,000 to go to the Big Apple. Choir director Michael Kahl said about 22 choir members are planning to go on the trip. The cost is $1,500 per person, which includes airfare and hotel.

The choir will spend four days in New York, and most of the time will be spent rehearsing. The group will perform Jan. 17, along with several other choirs from across the country. “We will be representing not only Schreiner but the Kerrville community when we perform,” Kahl said.

The choir held one fundraiser this spring, which raised about $1,500. Several more fundraisers are being planned for the fall. Anyone interested in making a donation can contact Kahl at 830/792-7417 or by e-mail mgkahl@schreiner.edu.
