
Wendell Mayes ’42 is still going to college. “You might be interested in my graduation from St. Edward’s University with a Master of Liberal Arts degree on May 14 this year. I wrote a memoir about things related to my days in the Navy for my special project that was required instead of a thesis.”

Spencer Blocker ’52 has just finished Recall at Schreiner and is getting ready for a reunion at Texas Tech in May. In June, Spencer is getting together for the first time a Midland Jaycee 50’s reunion which will be attended by at least one Schreiner alumnus, Martin Allday ’44. In July, he’ll attend the 55th Stanton High School reunion where another Schreiner alumnus Bobby Hedrick ’52 will attend. In August the Blocker cousins hold their reunion, in Ruidoso, New Mexico, and Schreiner alumni Norman Blocker ’56 will be there.
Roy Harrell Jr., ’54 continues working with the Texas Export Development Board which has as a mission to get products manufactured in Texas to overseas markets. “Overseas trips are a must in this job. I continue to be amazed as to how much Europeans and Africans know about Texas and Texas lore.”

After “retiring” from Center Point Energy and trying his hand at consulting, David Barker ’64 was given the opportunity to work for an exciting company, Dril-Quip with its world headquarters in Houston. “Dril-Quip is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of offshore drilling and production equipment for use in deepwater environments. We have facilities in Houston; Aberdeen, Scotland; Singapore; and Brazil. I am in charge of manufacturing for the Western Hemisphere.”Mark Clements ’66 has four children, two boys and two girls. “The oldest, Andrea, has two master’s degrees, and works in Dallas. The next, Leslie, is just graduating from college in a month with a 4.0. Matthew is a music major, a junior, at UNT. And the youngest, Douglas, is a freshman at UT-San Antonio. While we live in Dallas, we have just about completed a second home on Lake Travis (in Barton Creek—Lakeside). I have been a practicing attorney in Dallas for the last 32 years, having graduated from SMU Law School in 1973. My wife Jerry is also an attorney, and practices in
Dallas, as well.”
For the past 10 years Dan Sowards ’68 has been director of the Manufactured Foods Division of the Texas Department of Health. In 2003 Dan received the highest honor a food and drug official in the U.S. can receive—the Harvey W. Wiley award, named after the father of the modern food and drug laws in this country. After leaving Schreiner in ’68, Dan obtained his degree in microbiology from the University of Texas in Austin. During that time, he studied under a Rotary Fellowship at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, where he met “a beautiful English au pair named Lois.” They married a year later. Dan and Lois returned to Zurich in October of this year to revisit many of the sites and people they knew. They have two children: Tracy Littlefield, 30, and Tim, 27, both of whom live in the Austin area. Tracy is scheduled to “deliver” their first grandchild in June!

Despite feeling the full frontal force of Hurricane Ivan, Royle Berry ’71 survived the storm without any damage to body or property. His three health clubs, one owned, two managed, also survived remarkably well. “The beaches between Pensacola and Destin and the Gulf of Mexico remain incredibly beautiful under normal circumstances and a great place to vacation. Come for a visit anytime!”
Chris Coughran ’72 has been married for 29 years to Mary Lynn (Kilgore) of Telferner, Texas. Both were members of the Texas A&M class of ’75. She is a senior financial analyst for Sally Beauty Supply, Inc., in Denton. “I’m self-employed with my own residential design company in Argyle, Texas. We have four children: Christina, A&M College Station ’99, 28 this June and married 16 months; Cassandra, A&M Corpus Christi ’05, 23 this November, married 10 months; Catherine, freshman at Univ. of North Texas, 18 this past February, and Christopher Jr., sixth grade at Argyle Middle School, 12.” Geoff Stoner ’74 produces a radio show, “Hot Bites,” heard throughout the Midwest. “I also write for three outdoor magazines and two Web sites.
I am still trying to qualify for the World Ice Team Championships.”David Ainsworth ’74 has a personal connection with Schreiner that goes back much further than his attendance at the college. “I was a faculty brat and grew up on the Schreiner campus. Thus, you might say that I was at Schreiner from 1956 to 1974. My father, Ford Ainsworth, taught English at Schreiner for many years. My older brother is also an alumnus. I am now an assistant professor of theater at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas.”
R. Linda (Flores) Bradley ’79 and her family are heading back to Dallas, after a short stay in Panama City, Florida. Husband Lou will be the new CEO/hospital administrator of Life Care Hospital of Dallas. Lou, Linda and their three children are all excited about being closer to family. 
Mark Woodruff ’82 graduated in journalism/public relations from UT Austin before returning to work at Schreiner for his first job. “I was there for two years and I got some really great experience. I wrote for SCENE, did a ’Campus Notes’ weekly student publication, helped organize Recall and an exciting speaker series. It was a wonderful chance to get experience in communications. For the first several months on the job, I lived upstairs in Hoon Hall and was the only resident on the floor. The dorm was really broken down at the time and rumored to be haunted. I even had a meal ticket for the cafeteria as part of my compensation. Those were good times. The campus has changed so much since then. Today I work for BMC Software’s Creative Solutions group in Austin. I’ve been married for 17 years. Stacia and I were married by the campus minister at the outdoor chapel at Mo Ranch, and we have two incredible boys, Alec, 13 and Mac, 10. I still stay in touch with two other basketball players who live in the Austin area, Bill Shaw ’82 and Ragan Altizer ’83. Ragan and I play in an Austin band, The Carport Casanovas.”Douglas Miles ’87 lives in Fort Worth. “I wish I still lived in the Hill Country! In January I finished my masters in business management at
the A.B. Freeman School of Business
at Tulane.”
John Garcia Jr. ’89 is a professional actor/singer/theater critic who has performed and toured throughout the United States and is currently the regional theater critic for www.talkinbroadway.com. On April 8, 2005, John was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award for Excellence in Theater by the University of North Texas. He graduated from UNT with a B.A. in theater and vocal performance. This award was chosen by the faculty of the theater department.

Marianne Wofford ’90 has served as co-chairwoman for Hill Country College Fund this year and is pleased to welcome a new grandson. Beck Scott Wofford was born in April in Austin, weighing in at 6 lb., 7 oz. and measuring 19.5 inches. “And he is gorgeous! I’m not kidding, he really is. Enough dark hair to brush, perfect eyes, ears, nose, mouth, great looking. Best
of all, he’s healthy and mom Erin is doing great, so is dad Bryan even though he admits he didn’t work quite as hard as Erin.”
Since Richard A. Garrett ’91 left Schreiner College, “I finished
my Master of Education at Sul Ross State University, taught school in Kerrville and Bandera for nine years, then moved back to the Rio Grande Valley and began teaching at LaJoya ISD. During the summers and on Christmas breaks, I have worked in
the oil patch. I do most of my work out of Singapore and Thailand, with a few trips to the Philippines. My wife is from Manila, Philippines. This summer I plan to work in the Ukraine, if things go well. I will leave on June 9. I also
fly duster planes in the Rio Grande Valley out of Los Fresnos, Texas, on
my weekends. I went to college late in life, but it has been a worthwhile experience, and I plan to live to at
least 100.”
Melissa Haglund ’91 married Butch Lee Jr. of Bryan, Texas, and on December 29, 2004, they had a son, Gage Anthony Lee. “Of course twin sister, Theresa Haglund Menges ’91 was in the delivery room when Gage arrived. Butch, Melissa and Gage live in Huntsville, Texas, as do Theresa and her husband. Both teach at Willis High School in Willis, Texas. Other sister, Julie Haglund Fiedler ’97 of Harper, Texas, now comes to visit quite often to
see her nephew, Gage. Hopefully Gage will attend Schreiner like his mommy and aunts.”
Samantha (Walker) Bowe ’93 lives in Houston with her two children, Spencer Christian, age 3, and Kendall Brooke, age 17 months. Samantha works for Shell Lubricants as a human resources consultant. Scott Aston ’94 and his wife Carla live in Abilene, Texas. “I enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 1998, and after basic training was sent to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif., for the basic Russian course.” Seven years later, Scott is now a staff sergeant, getting prepared to deploy to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Scott has also been to Kosovo, and more recently to Iraq at the notorious Abu Ghraib Prison. Scott plans on getting out of the service “sometime” in 2006.
Norma Hogan Saunders ’94 has been named to Manchester’s Who’s Who Among Executive and Professional Women in Healthcare.
Stephen P. Mercer ’94 and wife Rene are the proud parents of Sarah Beth Mercer, born April 20, 2004. Stephen is in his 10 year teaching geometry and coaching tennis at Mansfield Summit High School in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. His tennis team, in only it’s third year in existence, defeated the defending district champion Mansfield Tigers and went 7-0 in district. Stephen was named District 6-5A Coach of the Year. His wife Rene is in graduate school at her alma mater, Texas Christian University, and is working on getting her master’s in math education.
Celia Escamilla ’94 commuted from Kingsland for five years to get her Schreiner degree. She was first hired to teach Spanish in Kingsland and in 1998 became the first P.E. teacher in Kingsland where she currently teaches at Packsaddle Elementary.
Drs. Keith and Natalie (Peveto ’96) Wheeler are proud to announce the birth of their daughter Jaden Victoria on October 4, 2004. Her parents are chiropractors, busy in their own practices. “We live in Kirbyville, Texas, and everyone is doing well.”
Amy Shenberger ’96 works in Tempe, Arizona, at Arizona State University as the program coordinator for all inbound exchange students and outbound ASU students heading to Asia and Africa. “I am working on finishing up my master’s in International and Intercultural Management from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. Recently, I spent several weeks in South Africa visiting our partner universities in Cape Town.”
Sarah (Guynes) Carr ’96 and husband Dr. Joel Carr “joined the Navy right before our daughter was born, and we were sent overseas shortly after her birth in 2003. We have been in Japan since then.”

Mary (Yruegas) Canales ’97 earned her professional human resources certification earlier this year. The certification is awarded by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). In order to become certified, Mary had to meet professional experience requirements, in addition to passing a rigorous, comprehensive examination covering seven different areas in the human resource body of knowledge. Mary was employed as an HR manager at Inn of the Hills here in Kerrville from 1998-2001. She has been working for Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi since 2001 as an HR generalist.
April (Taylor) Rodriguez ’99 completed her master’s degree in forensic toxicology from UTHSCSA in May 2003 and has recently moved to the Dallas area, where she is employed with the Drug Enforcement Administration as a forensic chemist. She is also a fitness competitor and placed second at the 2004 NPC Texas State Championship which qualifies her to complete at the national level.
Leslie (Swanson) Quinn ’98 is now living in Idaho and is a coach for Highland 15 Club team of Intermountain Volleyball Association. “It was quite exciting to see that I still hold some of the Schreiner volleyball records. My girls got a kick out of that. Also, my husband and I have been foster parents almost four years now. In that time, we have had a total of 18 children in our home (two of which we had for over a year). This is my way of giving back to society and all those who have helped me in my life.”
Jeanna Martinez ’98, and husband Manny live in San Antonio, are doing great. They had their third child, Michael Patton, in March, 2004, joining Lauren, 4, and Edward, 2. Jeanna graduated from Incarnate Word In May 2004 with a master’s in multidisciplinary sciences, and is teaching in SAISD. Manny owns MDM Painting and Renovations, and is currently doing both new home painting and older home renovations.
Brittany Leigh (Mecom-Manal) Malone ’99 married John Michael Malone on October 9, 2004, in Dallas. They live in Frisco, Texas, where Brittany works as a sales executive for Corporate Express, a national office supply company.
Monica Ortega ’99 is the proud mother of Megan Elizabeth Holcomb who is now 17 months old.
Samuel Snoek-Brown ’99 attended Schreiner as Samuel Snoek, changing surnames when he married former Schreiner student Jennifer Brown ’98. “My wife, Jennifer Snoek-Brown, is currently a reference librarian and faculty liaison at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. I am working on my doctorate in English (specializing in creative writing–fiction) at the University of North Texas. I teach technical communication as a teaching fellow, and this April I received an Outstanding Teaching Fellow award from the university. I’m also working as production editor on the American Literary Review.

Jackie Graham Moore ’01 and husband Bart recently became parents of a beautiful baby girl named Jenifer Taylor Moore. She was born May 29, 2004. “I am starting my fourth year teaching at Alamo Heights ISD. My husband Bart is vice-president of Doug Brown Construction in San Antonio.”
Caroline James Mitchell ’01 and her husband, Robert Mitchell, just celebrated the one-year anniversary of their business opening. Blue Sea Adventures.com is a full service scuba facility in Rockwall, Texas, offering 35 different certifications and classes in scuba diving, as well as sales, service, and rental of scuba equipment.
Angela Schladoer ’01 is in her
third year of podiatry school in Chicago. “I began my clinical rotations January 3, 2005. I will be graduating with a doctorate in podiatric medicine in 2006 and will then begin my residency.”
Douglas K. Drake Jr. ’01 currently lives in Allen, Texas. “I have a 4-year
old son, Tyler Drake. He is my world.
I work for the city of Allen in the parks and recreation department. Before
that, I was a middle school teacher for three years.”
Laurie Cloud ’02 and Heath C. Gregory ’01 were married on June 5, 2004, on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. They currently live and work in Kerrville where Laurie is a manager at Chili’s restaurant and Heath has begun a career with Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Company.
Kelly (Moffett) Martin ’01 has just started working on her Ph.D. in K-12 educational leadership through an online program at Walden University.
Will Gates ’02 and wife Kim just had a baby on April 12. His name is William Ayden Gates. He was born at Hamilton Hospital in Dalton, Georgia, weighing in at 8 lbs 1 oz and was 20 1/2 inches long.
Shauna Dodds ’02 and her sister have recently started their own design business, Backstage Design Studio, concentrating mainly on the Texas music industry. “To date, we have done work for Gary P. Nunn, Randy Rogers, Aaron Watson, Wade Bowen, Front Porch Texas, and several others. Our album cover art for Aaron Watson’s “Live at the Texas Hall of Fame,”
and Randy Rogers’ “Rollercoaster” can be seen in stores near you.”
Missy Marie Pump (Brock) ’03 recently married Chris Pump. “I am working at Barton Logistics, Inc., a truck broker’s office, in Kerrville and living in Medina.”
Paul Huchton ’03 will be returning to Alaska for another season of employment with Royal Celebrity
Tours for the summer of 2005, “enjoying life and avoiding the real world as long as possible.”
Michelle Conner ’03 is living in Kerrville and substituting at Tivy High School. Husband Brian is an auto tech at Crenwelge Motors. “We will have been married for 17 years this June 4. I’m hoping to get a teaching position in the fall. After I finished my bachelor’s in biology at Schreiner I also got my teacher certification and my master’s of education from Schreiner. I am currently attending Walden University (an online accredited university) and working on my Ph.D. in K-12 educational leadership. My hobbies are homework/education, gardening, anything to do with my computer, fishing, and camping. I am on the directors board for the Hill Country Toy Run Association in Johnson City that provides Christmas money and gifts for less fortunate children in
the Cherokee Home for Children
in Cherokee.”
Tiffany Judkins ’03 has been accepted into the Harvard University Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “This fall, I will begin pursuing a master’s degree in a one-year program in education policy and management. Upon completion of this program, I may either pursue a Ph.D. in the same area, or become employed as a research analyst or consultant.”
Sandra Vaughn ’04 has been teaching in Claremore, Oklahoma. “I gained certification for special education and I am teaching primarily mentally retarded and other health-impaired students. I love the area and the small school. The building is for fifth- and sixth-grade students only, although I serve fifth through eighth grades. These are special students who have come a long way this year. I have really felt that this is where the Lord wanted me to be. I feel like I have touched their lives as much as they have touched mine.”
Steve Hopkins ’04 is working at the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, as a physical therapist, while wife Kelly (Dean) Hopkins ’95 is working at the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Nashville Crime Laboratory as a special agent forensic scientist in toxicology. “We have two children now—Braden Kyle Hopkins just turned 2 on March 28 and Jacob Garrett Hopkins will be 6 months old on May 11. We are very blessed to have two beautiful children. Braden loves playing golf, baseball, soccer, basketball, and football—anything with balls! His little brother enjoys watching him run around and wishes he could do the same.”
Jarrett Aldrich ’04 is marrying “the most beautiful, loving, Christian girl I’ve ever met. She’s a graduate from Texas A&M and is currently teaching
kindergarten. We’re tying the knot

my master’s degree in English here at

Erin R. Tate ’04 graduated last year
and started the master’s program at
Kansas State University. “While at
Schreiner, I had the honor of taking a
Native American literature class, and
because of that class, I have decided
to focus my thesis project on Native American literature.” She will graduate
from Kansas State in May, 2006, and
begin her Ph.D.
Upon graduation from Schreiner, Lacy
Thompson-Gross ’03 married “the
most creative man I’ve ever met, Aaron
Gross, a glass-blower from Austin.
After getting married, I had a very loud
little baby girl; Delaney was born July
31, 2004. I am a full time mom and
business partner with my husband.
We have a full-fledged glass blowing
studio and gallery on South Congress in
Austin. If you’re ever in the area, come

Kelly McCullough ’04 is currently
working as a high school mathematics
teacher in Medina, Texas.
Laran G. Snyder ’04 is a vocalist
and registered massage therapist. “Of
course, music is my life’s calling. I’ll
soon be studying in Vienna, where I
will immerse myself in German courses
and private vocal coaching to prepare
myself for auditions at the Vienna
Conservatory and a music school in
Graz, Austria. I have been blessed to
have a family through the large web
