Students of the Year

‘03 Peer Advisors, Mentors


The 2003 Peer Advisors

Peer Advisors welcome new students to campus during Mountaineer Days in the summer.

The ’03 Peer Mentors are: Taylor Brown, Susanna Buie, Emily Chaney, Cortnie Jones, Crystal Kelley, Nancy Nixon, Mimi Probst and Afton Sands.

Peer Mentors also welcome new students to campus during Mountaineer Days in the summer and spend time during the fall semester acquainting new students with the university’s services, teaching them about college life and helping them make friends.

Alpha Lambda Delta

Thirty freshmen were inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society on March 4. Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society that recognizes outstanding first-year students. The 2003–04 Student Senate executive officers are: Afton Sands, president; Chrystal Lee, vice president; Teosha Blaylock, secretary; Jimmy Fluegel, treasurer; and Emily Chaney, parliamentarian.

Senior class officers are: Nico Ojeda, president; Xavier Perez, vice president; and McKi Southern, secretary.

Junior class officers are: Chris Hernandez, president; Margie Diaz, vice president; Michelle Leija, secretary; and Brian Lake, treasurer.

Sophomore class officers are: August Blackburn, president;
Charmelyn Fortune, vice president; and Katie Van Dyke, treasurer.

Sigma Tau Delta

On Nov. 19, four students and two faculty members were inducted into the Alpha Gamma Xi chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, Schreiner’s English honors society. The inductees are Margaret Swyers, Melissa Bradshaw, Erin Tate, Leann Wiemers, Dr. Leslie Williams and Dr. Lydia Kualapai.

2003 Who’s Who

Sixteen seniors were named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges 2003. The recipients were selected based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success. The seniors are: Andy Barham, Leslie Barron, Chris Campbell, Jeannette Decker, Corrie Desmuke, Nancy Faris, Toni Fluegel, Julie Gerth, Amanda Hamala, Natalie Hamala, Tiffany Judkins, Heather Kelly, Rebekah Schautteet, Abby Shupe, Janna Smith and McAlister Southern.

Honors Program

Twenty students were inducted into the Honors Program on Jan. 23. Inductees are: August Blackburn, Maria Chavez, Julia Dea'k, James Fluegel, Charmelyn Fortune, Gillian Friedel, April Garcia, Shari Glover, Chris Hernandez, Kristin Jetton, Cortnie Jones, Nick Landes, Megan McDonald, Sally Middleton, Michael Moore, Lilliana Morales, Kristen Morton, Meriruth Reed, Kelly Uhlenhaker and Stuart Walker.

Alpha Chi honor society

Fifteen students we re inducted into Schreiner’s Texas Alpha Sigma Chapter of Alpha Chi, a national college honor society, on Nov. 12. Inductees are “Ruthie” Verlene Wallace, Lorrain Meek, Nancy Nixon, Afton Sands, Shelly Stark, Leslie Barron, Lindsey Brotherton, Aaron Vogler, Amanda Miller, Antonio Breda, Jennifer Moody, Jamie McFarland, LaVerne “Sam” Baublit, Jorge Guajardo and Edward Verhelst.

2003–04 Cheerleaders

Chandra Bennett, Kelly Carrigan, Charity Johnson, Tiffany Kirkland, Chris Porter, Mimi Probst and Ashley Till were selected for the 2003–04 cheerleading team.

Junior wins Coca -Cola internship

Junior Maria Chavez won a paid internship at Coca-Cola in Atlanta this summer. Upon completion of the internship, Chavez will receive a $10,000 scholarship for the 2003–04 year. Schreiner set up a program to help students apply for outside scholarships in fall 2002. Last spring, Chavez became the first Schreiner student to receive funds through the program when she was awarded $2,500 from the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. The HSF then submitted her application to Coca-Cola.

Four students place in national competition

Sara Barnes, Mark Enke, Michael Masor and Arthur Queen placed nationally in a web-based strategic management simulation conducted by Management Simulations Inc. of Northfield, Ill. After four rounds, the four-member team was ranked 55 out of 707 teams. There are eight rounds in the competition.

Sumners Scholars

Trustees of the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation named Schreiner’s 2003–04 scholars. They are: Chandra Bennett, Cynthia Dees, Margarita Diaz and Michelle Leija. Meriruth Reed was named an alternate. On April 10, the foundation’s nine trustees interviewed 16 Schreiner students. Schreiner’s senior scholars— Lindsey Brotherton, Toni Fluegel, Julie Gerth, Rebekah Schautteet and Janna Smith—were recognized during the Sumners banquet on April 9 in the Cailloux Campus Activity Center.

Schreiner is one of only six universities in Texas and Oklahoma that benefits from the scholarship program. In addition to receiving an academic scholarship, Sumners scholars are invited to attend seminars and conferences that encourage leadership training.

Schreiner’s first sorority and fraternity chartered this spring

On Jan. 25, the Gamma Gamma chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon became Schreiner’s first sorority to be chartered. The 31 members of Delta Phi Epsilon attended the chartering ceremony, along with representatives of the national headquarters and sorority members’ friends and family. DPhiE officers are Nancy Nixon, president; Susanna Buie, vice president for operations; Emily Chaney, vice president for programming; Chandra Bennett, vice president for recruitment; Caroline Key, vice president for academic affairs; Afton Sands, vice president for membership development; and Crystal Kelley, member-at-large.

Schreiner’s first fraternity was chartered on May 2—the Texas
Sigma chapter of Phi Delta Theta. The 25 members of Phi Delta
Theta attended the chartering ceremony, which was conducted
by national officers. Phi Delta Theta’s officers are: Nico Ojeda,
president; Scooter Womack, vice president; Chris Hernandez,
treasurer; Jimmy Fluegel, secretary; Xavier Perez, warden; Nate
Deaton, rush chairman; Scott Huckabay, Phikia educator; Jude
Tortorice, risk management; Dewayne Kirksey, alumni secretary
and chaplain; Josh Dolan, brotherhood chairman; Dustin
Hicklin, social chairman; Paul Huchton, fundraiser; Andrew
Ramirez, historian; and Lance Hrncir, chorister.
