The
Mountaineer women’s soccer team experienced the growing
pains of a rebuilding year as they finished the 2005
season with a 3-14 overall record and a 2-11 record in
the ASC. Although the number of players on the roster
increased this year, the Mountaineers were a young team,
with three seniors and one junior on a roster of 17.
Bright spots for the Mountaineers were freshman
goalkeeper Stephanie Reed, of West Columbia, as she
finished the season ranked second in the conference in
saves (10.67/game) and eighth in shutouts with 2. Junior
midfielder Ashley Avalos of Corpus Christi, was also
among the conference standouts, earning a number five
spot in shots per game (4.17). “I think the team showed
character in that we never quit and stayed in the match
for 90 minutes,” commented Head Coach Neil Ellis. “Each
match we strived to improve and pushed to get better. I
think that will set the tone for next season.”
