The
Schreiner volleyball team began the year with high hopes
to establish itself in conference competition once
again. Plagued by injuries and misfortune, the
Mountaineers struggled through the ’05 season posting a
2-22 overall record and a 2-18 record in the ASC. Coach
John Wyatt Greenlee cited a silver lining in the play of
junior Whitney Barron of Richmond, as she ended the
season ranked second in the American Southwest
Conference in digs per game (5.09) and set a Schreiner
record in a match against LeTourneau University with 37
digs. Outside hitters Kassie Barlow of Harlingen, and
Danielle Gaitan of Seguin, did commendable jobs as well,
according to Greenlee, given the fact that they were
required to play out of position for most of the season.
“Next year, we will be able to put both Kassie and
Danielle back in their normal positions, where they will
be more comfortable and more effective. We will continue
to strengthen our foundation next season; we have a
solid core of veteran players returning and we have
verbal commitments from several key recruits,” states
Greenlee. “Next season we should realize this year’s
potential.”
